The Chiefs announced their roster moves to reach a 53-man roster Tuesday, and the list includes several players who have started or logged time with the Chiefs in previous years.
The Chiefs announced three on the injured reserve list, including veteran cornerback Nazeeh Johnson and rookie free agent Jake Briningstool. Offensive tackle Ethan Driskell was played on the reserve NFI (non-football injury) list.
Among the 29 players placed on waivers were linebacker Cam Jones, quarterback Chris Oladokun and running back Carson Steele. Jones played in all 34 regular-season games for the Chiefs in the past two years. Steele, last year’s training camp surprise, started three games in 2024.
The Chiefs released five players: linebacker Cole Christiansen, safety Mike Edwards, defensive tackles Mike Pennel and Marlon Tuipulotu and tight end Robert Tonyan.
Edwards won a Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs two years ago. Pennel has spent four of his 11 seasons in Kansas City.
Tonyan, who had an excellent training camp and was the team’s top receiver in the preseason, is expected to return to the Chiefs.
For now, the Chiefs are carrying eight wide receivers: Rashee Rice, Hollywood Brown, Xavier Worthy, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Jalen Royals, Tyquan Thornton, Nikko Remigio and Jason Brownlee.
Rice’s future is uncertain as he faces a suspension by the NFL for violating the league’s personal conduct penalty with his car crash last year.
Still, that’s an abundance of wide receivers, but the group collectively was impressive during the preseason.
Teams have until Wednesday at 11 a.m. to put in waiver claims on players from other teams. Later Wednesday, teams begin the process of putting together their 16-player practice squad.
There likely will be more roster shuffling before the Chiefs open the regular season on Sept. 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil.
