The Dallas Mavericks could have an unheralded standout in the making with point guard Brandon Williams.

Last season, Williams began the year with Dallas on a two-way contract—splitting his time between the G-League affiliate Texas Legends and the Mavericks.

However, when Dallas was hit with an extreme case of the injury bug, Williams made the most of his increased opportunities in the NBA.

Williams had a breakout performance of 31 points, six assists, and five rebounds against the Memphis Grizzlies late last year and averaged 15.4 points during a 13-game stretch towards the end of the season.

As a result of his stellar play, Dallas signed Williams to a two-year, $2.32 million contract on April 10.

“I know this is the first summer where I’m not playing for a contract or having to play in the summer league,” Williams said. “So, I can really focus on myself, my body, the team, coming in being a point guard, and just having that security. I can just go out there and just play free and play with confidence.”

Williams is expected to split point guard duties with free agent acquisition D’Angelo Russell, and the former Arizona Wildcat will be asked to step up in a major this upcoming season while star point guard Kyrie Irving recovers from a torn ACL.

Irving is someone Williams credits for his development in the league.

“I text (Irving) multiple times when I started to get a little success in the league this year – just on how you handle success, how you handle certain things, how you handle a good stretch of basketball, how you stay level-headed,” Williams said. “These are all kinds of questions I knew he had (the answers to).

“Knowing Kyrie, I know he loves to talk. So, I knew he was the right person to ask.”

With a clear role on the roster, Brandon Williams could be poised for a breakout season in Dallas.
