Tottenham could scupper Newcastle transfer plan; hijack on the cards?

Football finance expert makes shock admission over Tottenham hijacking Newcastle United’s move for Brentford star Yoane Wissa

Tottenham Hotspur need to be smart in the final days of the transfer window if they want to address the major issues on the pitch.

The Lilywhites want to sign a new No.10 and winger before September 1 transfer deadline. They have missed out on Eberechi Eze’s signing to arch-rivals Arsenal, while Manchester City have blocked the move for Savinho. There is frustration all around the club, especially with the rivals strengthening their respective squads ahead of a taxing campaign.

On the pitch, though, things have been great for Tottenham thus far. Thomas Frank’s side have started the new with a bang, winning their opening two games against Burnley and Manchester City. Five goals scored and two clean sheets kept, Frank could not have asked for a better start to life as the Tottenham boss.

Richarlison has arguably been the standout performer for the capital club. The centre-forward’s resurgence in form has seen him being rewarded with a call up to the Brazil squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers. With two goals and an assist in two games, he is now the club’s first-choice No.9 as per Frank’s admission.

Yoane Wissa is wanted by both Tottenham and Newcastle United

Tottenham could hijack Newcastle United’s signing for Yoane Wissa

One would think that with Richarlison returning to form and now most likely staying at the club, this would end the Lilywhites’ search for a new striker. But, that does not appear to be the case.

As per Football finance expert Stefan Borson, Spurs could hijack Newcastle United’s deal to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa.

Newcastle United have been attempting to sign Yoane Wissa over the last month, having seen an improved £40million bid rejected for his services last week. The Magpies have been eyeing striker reinforcements all summer following the speculation surrounding Alexander Isak, who wants to join Liverpool before next week’s transfer deadline.

Like Isak, Wissa is currently on strike as he looks to force out a move from the Gtech Community Stadium, having seen his last season’s strike partner, Bryan Mbeumo, depart for Manchester United. The DR Congo international wasn’t named in the Brentford squad for their first two games of the new Premier League campaign.

The 28-year-old has also been on Tottenham’s radar throughout the summer, with Frank eyeing a reunion with his ex-striker. The African poacher enjoyed a fantastic 2024/25 season, netting 20 goals and five assists in 39 appearances across all competitions. And now Stefan Borson says Spurs could beat Newcastle to Wissa’s signing before the transfer deadline day.

Tottenham forward Richarlison has been the standout performer under Thomas Frank

“I think contractually it’s much less likely that Brentford will hold the player than Isak,” Borson exclusively told Football Insider.

“I think it’s a 75-80 per cent chance that he will end up moving.

“I think Newcastle’s risk on that transaction is that let’s say Spurs get so frustrated by the other deals that have collapsed and just say we’ll pay the £50million or we’ll pay the £60million, whatever the number is, and they’ll just overpay.

“Then all of a sudden, Newcastle have been gazumped. I think the player will move, it’s a question of where and whether somebody comes from out of the blue to buy him or whether Newcastle just have a clear run.

“I think if Newcastle have a clear run, they’re just negotiating over £5-10million. I just do not see Brentford gambling on holding that player, given the amounts of money at stake. But does he have any leverage? I don’t think Wissa has any leverage at all in terms of being able to force his way out.”

Wissa deal looks unlikely

Tottenham’s clear focus remains on filling James Maddison’s void with a creative midfielder in the final week of the window. A winger in the form of Savinho also remains high on their agenda.

As Richarlison has shown signs of getting back his mojo and flourishing in Frank’s system, and club-record signing Dominic Solanke waiting in the wings to make an impact, Spurs need for a new No.9 is no more paramount now. Thus, we feel the chances of signing Wissa remain unlikely, giving Newcastle a free run at the Brentford star.
