‘Unbelievable’: Lee Hendrie can’t believe what he saw one Leeds player do vs Sheffield Wednesday

Lee Hendrie has explained how Dominic Calvert-Lewin would have been feeling after his ‘unbelievable’ penalty miss in the Carabao Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

Leeds United crashed out of the Carabao Cup in humiliating fashion on Tuesday as they lost on penalties to Sheffield Wednesday.

The game played out in a near-deserted Hillsborough as fans stayed away in protest of the club’s owner and a youthful Owls XI displayed the extent of their troubles.

Yet, Henrick Pedersen’s young team put on a brave performance that put Daniel Farke’s expensively assembled side to shame.

They deservedly took the lead when Jamal Lowe’s tame shot squirmed through Karl Darlow’s legs after the hour.

Jayden Bogle dragged his side level late on and Leeds pushed for a winner but the game went to penalties, in which the home side won 3-0.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin skied his penalty and Lee Hendrie gave his verdict on commentary.

The pressure was on after Joel Piroe had missed the opening spot-kick, allowing Wednesday to go 2-0 up, but he sent his shot high into the empty stand behind the goal.

Speaking on commentary in the aftermath of the spotkick, Hendrie said: “He will be so disappointed.

“He just needs that little bit of luck, doesn’t he and he blazes it high into the empty stand. Unbelievable.”

After the Owls went three up, Sean Longstaff then missed his penalty to see Leeds go out 3-0.

Speaking in the Sky Sports studio, pundit Izzy Christiansen added: “He snatches at it. He rushes it. He takes it straight away.

“He’s an excellent penalty taker; his record for Everton is excellent in front of goal from the penalty spot. His record in this competition is brilliant, but that wasn’t.”

Lee Hendrie not a fan of Joel Piroe’s penalty technique

Calvert-Lewin’s penalty wasn’t the only one that disappointed Hendrie, though, as he also took umbrage with Piroe’s approach.

Last season’s top scorer stepped up first but employed a slow, stuttered run-up and then hit his penalty at the perfect height for Ethan Horvath to make the save.

Hendrie said: “This is brilliant, it really is. Talk about a big, big moment in this penalty shoot-out.

“Ethan Horvath steps up, goes the right way. I’m not a big fan of people who dilly-dally as they step up to take their penalty; that’s what Piroe did.”

It was the first time in the history of Leeds that they failed to score in a penalty shootout.
