Man Utd team news: Predicted XI vs Grimsby as Ruben Amorim goes strong in Carabao Cup

Manchester United start their Carabao Cup campaign earlier than usual tonight when they travel to Blundell Park to face League Two side Grimsby Town. Ruben Amorim is already under mounting pressure after two disappointing results at the dawn of his first full campaign, and can't afford a giant killing on the east coast.

With that, and the importance of cup competitions in a season with no European football, in mind, United will likely go stronger than expected against fourth-tier opposition. Express Sport runs through a probable lineup in the first of two crucial, must-win fixtures for Amorim this week.

Man Utd predicted XI vs Grimsby Town (3-4-3)

Goalkeeper - Onana

Andre Onana has seemingly been demoted to cup goalkeeper after his exclusion from United's opening two Premier League fixtures. He should submit a transfer request on the night if he doesn't feature in this one, too.

Defence - Fredricson, Maguire, Heaven

Amorim's back three picks itself, based on the defenders he has named on the bench in the league thus far.

Harry Maguire's first start of the season will offer Matthijs de Ligt a breather ahead of Burnley's visit to Old Trafford on Saturday.

Tyler Fredricson should come in for Leny Yoro, who is actually younger than the academy graduate but has established himself as one of the first names on Amorim's teamsheet.

Ayden Heaven will also start in place of Luke Shaw, who is enjoying his best injury-free run in recent memory. United need to keep it that way.

Midfield - Amad, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dalot

Amad's early substitution in Sunday's 1-1 draw against Fulham may have been with the trip to Grimsby in mind. He hasn't yet clicked as a right-wing-back.

On the left, Diego Leon could come in for his first start in English football. However, Diogo Dalot seems a more likely starter than the 18-year-old Paraguayan, who is yet to make a matchday squad.

Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes will likely come out in a straight swap with Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo.

The latter's lack of involvement so far this term has generated plenty of noise, so the spotlight will be on him at Blundell Park.

Attack - Zirkzee, Cunha, Sesko

Joshua Zirkzee missed most of pre-season through injury and has been an unused substitute in United's two openers. A start is on the cards, but he won't play the full game.

Matheus Cunha has yet to open his account since joining from Wolves, but he has caught the eye with his early performances.

Amorim will want him to get off the mark sooner rather than later and can rely on the Brazilian's leadership and work rate.

Benjamin Sesko is in line to make his first start as a United player, following two substitute cameos against Arsenal and Fulham. He'll receive a warm welcome...
