Wants to move past Cutdown Day.
Joe mentioned this briefly yesterday, but it’s time to flesh it out a bit.
This week has been rough for Gators Kyle Trask fans after the team decided four seasons and five training camps was ample time for Trask to develop into a capable backup for a team with high goals.
Trask was released and in his place, veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was knighted as the Bucs’ No. 2 quarterback behind Baker Mayfield.
On Tuesday, Joe asked head coach Todd Bowles if the Bucs are interested in adding a quarterback from outside One Buc Palace to the roster. Many players were officially released yesterday as NFL teams had to whittle down rosters to the league-mandated 53.
Bowles seemed like he had bigger fish to fry than to sift through dozens of potential quarterbacks to sign for a No. 3 gig or a practice squad player.
“Yeah, it’s a long day,” Bowles said. “You know, we’ve got to see what’s available. We know what we have. We’ve got to see what they go up against and what we go up against as well. So, it’s going to be a long day as far as who we keep and who we don’t keep and that won’t be determined till tomorrow.
“There’s still a long way to go in this process.”
Joe’s willing to lay cash the Bucs will bring in someone from outside the building, quarterback, offensive lineman, inside linebacker, safety. There’s no telling who Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht may sign before preparations for Week 1 at Atlanta begin in earnest.
“This Joe” believes if the Bucs do sign any quarterback, it would be wide receiver Garrett Greene, who the Bucs sent packing yesterday.
Greene smells like the perfect practice squad guy. He can play receiver — he showed some promise — but he can also be a scout team quarterback because he was a QB at West Virginia.
Greene could fill two practice squad positions, both receiver and quarterback. And as receiver Ryan Miller has proven, just because one is on the practice squad doesn’t mean he will never get a promotion.
