Arsenal to move for Girona defender

Arsenal have launched a late bid for Girona full-back Arnau Martinez. The Gunners are also pushing ahead with talks for Piero Hincapie.

Arsenal chase Girona star

With the transfer clock ticking, Arsenal have turned their eye to Girona defender Arnau Martinez. As per reports, the Gunners have sent a €10m bid for the player. The offer includes add-ons, as Mikel Arteta tries to bolster his defense before the transfer deadline.

Martinez has been at Girona his whole career. He has made over 160 appearances for the side. While the player is mainly a right-back, he can play as a centre-half as well.

His price tag is also appealing compared to other defenders. With Girona open to a deal, the Gunners see a way to add depth without spending a lot. Though the player does not have loads of top-level experience in his young career. But, Arsenal could certainly use the experience he could bring into a long PL season.

Jurrien Timber has had an ACL and ankle surgery in the last two years.

Ben White just returned from a knee surgery and is still out injured every now and then.

Hincapie interest remains alive

At the same time, Arsenal are still tracking Piero Hincapie’s situation at Bayer Leverkusen. The centre-back has been on the club’s radar from a long time. But, the release clause of €60m is an issue. Sources say that Leverkusen may be willing to soften the price as the deadline nears. That said, it could make the way for a last minute move.

Although, any potential move for Hincapie would depend on possible exits. Jakub Kiwior has been linked with a transfer to Porto, while Oleksandr Zinchenko is unsure about his future at the club too.

The north London side’s transfer activity has already been heavy. They have spent over £200m on new faces. But, adding Martinez and possibly Hincapie would give Arteta’s team even more defensive security.

Author’s Opinion

Martinez looks like a low risk signing. He could play in multiple positional areas could be invaluable for Arteta. Hincapie would be the bigger statement signing. But, unless Arsenal clear space, it’s hard to see both deals getting done.
