Sandro Tonali, Joelinton & Alexander Isak: Newcastle United absentee list & estimated return dates.

A bruising encounter against Liverpool on Monday night was appreciated by the Geordie faithful, but the efforts of Eddie Howe and his players did not get their just rewards after falling to defeat in the 100th minute.

Now the Magpies head to Elland Road looking for their first victory of the campaign, and face being without some star names.

Anthony Gordon

Gordon was shown a straight red for a late challenge on Virgil van Dijk and will now serve a three-match domestic ban.

On the red card, Howe said: “I've seen it once and very rushed. It was as the game had restarted, so naturally I wanted to see it and wanted to move on very quickly. I think there's no intent he's gone in.

“Of course, probably too quickly. I think he's tried to pull out, not commit any damage to Virgil as he's gone in to slide. It's an unfortunate one, I think he's slightly unlucky with it.

“Everyone's told me it's a clear red. My first opinion was slightly different, but maybe I've got the wrong angle. So I've got sympathy for him.”

Estimated return date

Arsenal (H), 28/09.

Sandro Tonali

Tonali picked up a shoulder issue midway through the second-half and tried to continue before being taken off.

What’s been said?

Howe said: “Sandro, again doesn’t look good, couldn't move his arm. He said he wanted to stay on, but he wasn't functioning properly.”

Estimated return date

Joelinton

Joelinton left the pitch against Liverpool visibly upset after picking up a muscle injury inside the remaining quarter of an hour.

What’s been said?

Howe said after the game that “it doesn’t look” but Joelinton’s wife, Thays Gondim, has offered an encouraging update via Instagram.

She said: “And to answer everyone together, it's not serious! It's nothing to do with surgery! Muscular injury and he will be 100% in a few days, unfortunately not in time to go defend the Brazilian National Team!”

Howe will provide an official update when he speaks to the media on Friday ahead of the visit to Leeds.

Estimated return date

Wolverhampton Wanderers (H), 13/09.

Fabian Schar

Schar was withdrawn in the closing stages against Liverpool with a concussion.

What’s been said?

Taking to social media after the game, Schar wrote: “I am okay! Thanks for all the messages of concern. Disappointed to come off but proud of the team spirit and energy last night.”

Expected return date

Wolverhampton Wanderers (H), 13/09.

Alexander Isak

Isak remains on strike at Newcastle in an attempt to force through a move to Liverpool and if he stays, he won’t be reintegrated until after the international break.

What’s been said?

Speaking after the Liverpool game, Howe said: “Yes, I think that's the idea from everyone. Our side, Newcastle's side, is we want clarity, we want to move forward, we want the narrative to change because we're in the start of the season now, we're into the action and we've got to get results and we've got to try and focus on what we can control.

“We've given two really, really good performances, we've ended up at one point. That's tough for us to take, especially in this moment, when you're looking for positive to cling to. But we battled through and we've now got on to lead.”

Estimated return date

Wolverhampton Wanderers (H), 13/09.
