Dominic Calvert-Lewin made his debut for Leeds United in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, but it did not go to plan.

Leeds salvaged a 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, only to go out in penalties without even scoring one.

Paul Robinson criticised Karl Darlow for making a mess of the first Owls goal, with it going down as Darlow’s own goal.

Now, Calvert-Lewin has sent the Elland Road faithful a message after being dumped out of the Carabao Cup.

However, in the Owls, Daniel Farke’s men were up against a football club in an absolute mess.

The recorded attendance at Hillsborough was 7,801 due to the fan boycott against Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri.

However, that did not matter as the team with hardly any supporters in the ground knocked out last season’s Championship title winners.

Despite rotating his squad, the Whites still had Jaka Bijol, Joel Piroe, and Noah Okafor within their starting 11.

Calvert-Lewin came on from the bench in the 58th minute, missing several glaring late chances before skying his penalty over the bar.

The 28-year-old took to Instagram on 27 August to share a message with Leeds’ supporters.

“Very proud to make my debut for this great club tonight, but also disappointed with how it went,” he wrote.

“I came here to give everything and that’s what I will continue to do. Can’t wait to see you all at Elland Road.”

Will Leeds regret signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin?

While it is only early days, there are bound to be early question marks over the signing of the striker.

Indeed, his performance against the Owls was reminiscent of his displays for Everton last season, when he only bagged three Premier League goals.

Of course, Calvert-Lewin arrived at Elland Road on a free transfer, so there is no jeopardy in terms of transfer fee.

However, the Peacocks may have been better off shelling out high wages on a player with a better recent record.

Only time will tell if the 28-year-old was a worthwhile signing, but based on current evidence, it does not look promising.
