Newcastle United have seen a £55m bid rejected for Jorgen Strand Larsen - and here’s what Wolves boss Vitor Pereira has been saying about the striker.
As if you didn’t realise it already, Newcastle United’s search for a striker is getting desperate. Very desperate, in fact.
With just days of the window remaining, the Magpies are scrambling around trying to push through a late deal to solve a summer-long problem - replacing Callum Wilson, aye, not the other one.
NUFC transfers: bid rejected for Jorgen Strand Larsen
And while moves for Yoane Wissa have proven totally fruitless, with Brentford refusing to budge on the player, despite numerous bids, the Magpies have now well and truly turned their attentions to Wolves and Norway frontman, Jorgen Strand Larsen.
The frontman, signed permanently just this summer by the Premier League strugglers, has already been subject to a £50million rejected bid on Monday. And again on Tuesday, the Magpies have seen a £55million move thwarted by Wolves, who seemingly don’t want to sell - at least not at the price Newcastle have so far proven they’ll pay.
Speaking prior to news of the bid being revealed, following a two-goal salvo from Strand Larsen seeing them through to the third round of the Carabao Cup, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira made some interesting comments about the player’s future - and those words go some way to proving that this pursuit may well not be over.
He said: “If it's my decision, of course (I want to keep him), because he's a very important player.
"It's not only about the technical and tactical (ability), it's about the character. He's a player with character.
"He’s a team player, a top player Until now, he is our player.”
Most interesting of all was this five-word response: “Every player has a price.” Pereira went on to add: “I understand football.”
NUFC short on strikers
The situation for Newcastle is dire at present in the forward department. With Wilson long since departed and Alexander Isak on strike and refusing to play, numbers were already light.
Anthony Gordon has been deputising in the striker role in the opening weeks, however his straight red card against Liverpool will see him out of Premier League action until the end of September. He can, of course, play in the Carabao Cup third round and the Champions League in the meantime, however.
That leaves just Monday night goalscorer Will Osula as an option up top, or makeshift switches for players such as Harvey Barnes or Anthony Elanga.
