Fabian Hurzeler has welcomed Evan Ferguson’s promising debut for Roma.

And he has said that sort of performance is exactly why he went on loan to Serie A.

Ferguson received positive reviews for his efforts in a 1-0 win at home to Bologna as the Italian top-flight season got up and running.

His display, which received man-of-the-match billing in some quarters, was held up by some fans as an example of the folly of letting him go as his parent club then ran out of strikers at Everton.

Hurzeler told The Argus: “He did well, so for sure we will follow it and that's also what we expect.

“We want him to do well. That's the reason, that's the sense from the loan.

“I'm hoping that he continues like this because I'm sure, like I always said, at one point, he will hopefully help Brighton.”

Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini said: "Evan is improving. Last year he didn't play much, and it's normal that he needs a period of adjustment.

"But he has shown he has important qualities. He's a dynamic striker with room for improvement. He's happy to be at Roma.

“He came with the desire to do well and, when you have that foundation, you have a good chance of growing.

“And I really believe Evan will give us great satisfaction in the future."
