Scott Parker paid tribute to Aaron Ramsey after the Aston Villa academy product's first goal for almost two-and-a-half years helped Burnley to a 2-1 Carabao Cup victory over Derby County.

Ramsey, the 22-year-old brother of former Villa star Jacob Ramsey, opened the scoring with a composed fourth-minute finish in only his second appearance since suffering a serious knee injury in a Premier League game against Arsenal in February 2024.

Clarets boss Parker said: "I'm really pleased for Aaron.

"It's been a really long road back for him from his injury. He took his goal so well and I thought his overall performance was very good.

"It's good to get some minutes into his legs and that was the same for a lot of the boys tonight who needed it as well. We started the game well with a lovely goal from Aaron and we probed well without creating too many chances against a very good Derby side.

Ramsey was among 11 changes as the Clarets sealed their place in round three with a stoppage-time winner from defender Oliver Sonne.

The former England youth midfielder found the net for the first time since scoring for loan club Middlesbrough in a 5-1 win over Norwich in April 2023.

From Great Barr, he joined Villa when he was eight and progressed through the academy with older brother Jacob, who was sold last week to Newcastle United for £40m. Their younger brother Cole Ramsey is still part of the Villa youth setup.

Aaron Ramsey was part of the Villa team who beat Liverpool to win the FA Youth Cup in 2021. He was sold to Burnley two years ago for around £12m without making a senior appearance for the club.
