Man Utd have a difficult decision to make in the final days of the summer transfer window.

Kobbie Mainoo is open to leaving Manchester United in the final days of the summer transfer window after growing frustrated because of his reduced role under head coach Ruben Amorim. The 20-year-old has largely been limited to a substitute position since he returned from injury last December and does not appear to have an obvious role in the current tactical set-up.

It is understood Mainoo has even discussed a possible transfer exit with his teammates, and United have considered a sale throughout the summer transfer window. United sources insist Mainoo is not being forced out of the club, and they still expect him to be at the club beyond the European transfer deadline next week.

A potential sale is attractive to United in the sense that any fee received for the academy graduate would be classified as pure profit, though there might not be many teams that could actually tempt them into a full transfer this late into the transfer window. If United were to sell Mainoo, they would almost certainly have to sign a replacement given their shortage of senior central midfield options.

Romano issue Mainoo transfer update

At the moment, there is a great deal of uncertainty surrounding Kobbie Mainoo. The 20-year-old is open to leaving the club unless he can be assured of an improved role and Manchester United would consider selling him if a club can match their transfer demands. It doesn't mean that will happen with just five days remaining of the summer transfer window.

Mainoo is expected to start when United travel to face Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night and Ruben Amorim will once again be quizzed on the future of the young midfielder, irrespective of how well he plays tonight.

"Let me tell you, the situation will be clearer in the next 24, maximum 48 hours," Romano said. "There will be conversations, Manchester United will discuss with Kobbie Mainoo to understand the situation.

"Kobbie was disappointed after the last game but it doesn't mean Kobbie Mainoo is 100% leaving Manchester United. So, we have to wait to see how these conversations go and then we will understand more. So let's wait, but at the moment I can guarantee, that of Tuesday night there are no negotiations with Manchester United and any club for Kobbie Mainoo. Nothing is advanced, nothing is concrete at this stage. We have to follow the situation until the very end but at the stage nothing imminent."
