Bowen issues apology

West Ham skipper Jarrod Bowen has spoken out after he was involved in unsavoury scenes following West Ham's 3-2 defeat at Wolves on Tuesday night.

The club captain personally enjoyed an improved performance at Molineux having been restored to his favoured position on the right by Head Coach Graham Potter, after starting West Ham's previous two matches in a central position.

And despite producing an excellent assist for West Ham's second goal of the game - Lucas Paqueta's header, which sent the Hammers 2-1 ahead at the time - Bowen was unable to prevent his team from falling to defeat following yet more defensive lapses late on.

Still worse was to follow for the captain however, for as he applauded the travelling supporters after the final whistle he was visibly angered by comments made by a small body of fans. Reacting impulsively, a clearly angered Bowen attempted to approach the abusive individuals - having initially walked away - before being restrained by team mates.

And shortly after the incident, the 28-year-old - no doubt encouraged by his employers - took to social media in order to issue an apology for his angry response to the boo-boys.

"Apologies to the fans for tonight's reaction," wrote Bowen. "I'm someone who is passionate and will fight every time I step on the pitch. But I need to set a better example, and you fans know how much I love you and this club.

"We ride through the bad times together and I'll see you all Sunday."

While Bowen's apology was perhaps understandable in the circumstances, the vast majority of supporters will not only sympathise with the skipper but feel an explanation was unnecessary.

As one member of the first team squad who could never be accused of giving anything less than 100 per cent effort, he will be a key component in arresting West Ham worrying start to the campaign.

And the last thing Bowen, the club or the loyal supporters require right now are idiotic individuals abusing the very players they profess to support.
