Arne Slot told that Liverpool look 'vulnerable' despite 3-2 win v Newcastle on Monday

Liverpool somehow managed to beat Newcastle 3-2 on Monday evening in their second Premier League game of the 2025-26 season.

The clash was held at St James’ Park, and although Eddie Howe’s men were the better team by some distance, the Reds still came away with all three points.

This win has put them third in the top-flight table, and, although it’s still early days, it’s clear that it’s going to be a competitive campaign for most teams in the league.

Even though Liverpool have spent over £250million on trying to improve their ranks this summer, it’s unclear whether the sales of players such as Luis Diaz will come back to bite them.

David James believes Liverpool look ‘vulnerable’ this season

One of the main problems that Arne Slot has faced this season is the fact that his team still needs time to gel.

Due to the number of new faces that have been brought in, Liverpool’s first-team squad won’t fully understand how each of their team members plays.

And, while speaking on BBC Radio Five Live in quotes relayed by BBC Sport, David James gave his thoughts on how “vulnerable” the Reds have looked this term.

“Arne [Slot] has got some thinking and sorting out to do because a few things cropped up in the three games – if you include the [Community Shield] game against Crystal Palace,” he said.

“Aerially, you would think Liverpool were going to be dominant with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in there, but they look a little bit vulnerable at times.

“It’s good that they are winning, but there is still room for Arne to do some work.”

Signing Marc Guehi should be on top of Arne Slot’s priority list this summer

One player who has been consistently linked with a Liverpool transfer this summer is Marc Guehi.

The Crystal Palace captain is in the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, and although the Reds would be able to sign him for free next summer, a move for him now makes much more sense.

And, that’s because the form of Ibrahima Konate has been non-existent this term, with the Frenchman being one of the main reasons behind Liverpool’s poor performances.

Indeed, Joe Gomez is another senior option that Liverpool could use, but since his injury history leaves a lot to be desired, it’s unclear whether he’s going to be readily available throughout the 2025-26 campaign.

Of course, only time will tell what the future has in store, but if a new centre-back isn’t brought in by Slot and Richard Hughes this summer, it could cost them everything.
