Louie Barry has been urged to play his way into Ireland's World Cup qualification plans by boss Heimir Hallgrimsson.

Aston Villa striker Barry is on loan at Sheffield United this season and has previously had temporary stints at Ipswich, Swindon, MK Dons, Salford City and Stockport.

The English-born 22-year-old was involved in Ireland's U15 and U16 setup in the past, but has been capped for England up to U18 level.

Yet Hallgrimsson has revealed that Barry is on his radar and is open to an Ireland call-up.

The Ireland boss said: "He's another good option we've been looking at. We watched him last season in League 1 and he's a little different, he's really direct. He's a guy that if you really need a goal, he would at least go for it.

"He's really direct and has good individual skills, but let's see how he copes with a step upwards."

Hallgrimsson continued: "I called him and he was really happy that we're watching him.

"He would be ready to go whenever we call upon him, so it's another option we have. Hopefully we get a chance to see him at some stage. It's interesting and just a different kind of player."
