Chelsea have yet to table a formal offer for Barcelona attacking midfielder Fermin Lopez, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed reports that the Blues are interested in the 22-year-old, but so far, negotiations have not progressed beyond talks with his representatives:
“Chelsea spoke to the player’s agents on Tuesday. There was direct contact between the agents of Fer Lopez and Chelsea to discuss about the situation of the player, to ask how is the situation of Fermin Lopez, to understand the eventual contract details. So Chelsea wanted to be informed on the situation of Fermin Lopez.”
“Why? Because at Barcelona there are many players in that position, and so Chelsea wanted to be informed, something like ‘okay, how much is the salary? How is the contract situation? How is it going at Barcelona?’ Whether the player would be open to leaving or not. So, just a conversation with the agents. At the moment, there is no bid, but the conversation [between] Chelsea [and the] agents of Fermin took place – for a player who has always been one of the players monitored and appreciated by Chelsea. Then, at this time of night – Tuesday night – still no bid on the table from Chelsea to Barcelona.”
Why are Chelsea interested in Lopez?
It is believed that Enzo Maresca’s side are looking at potential alternatives if they can’t secure the services of RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons.

The club have been in talks about signing the Netherlands international for several weeks, but there has been no breakthrough in negotiations. It appears that Lopez is regarded as an option if the Simons deal breaks down before the transfer window closes next week.
Sales will be required to fund a bid
Despite claims to the contrary, Romano has insisted that Chelsea have not lodged a formal proposal to sign Lopez, and that does make sense considering the London club’s transfer budget.
Any new arrivals are said to be contingent on Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson leaving Stamford Bridge. Both players have been linked with moves to Aston Villa in recent days.
