With the NFL preseason now over, players across the league and Maryland football alumni turned toward roster cuts, from 90 players to 53 per team. While some dreams continued, some paths towards a pro football roster became harder.
There were 32 Terps that featured on an NFL preseason roster. Below is the shake-up entering the regular season.
Defensive tackle Tommy Akingbesote was waived by the Dallas Cowboys. The seventh-round pick made four tackles in three preseason games.
Linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II for the Chicago Bears made the team. The fourth-round selection will make his NFL debut against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football, Sept. 8.
Wide receiver Tai Felton made the Minnesota Vikings. The third-round pick is on track to make his debut against the Bears.
Center Josh Kaltenberger was waived by the Los Angeles Chargers. The undrafted rookie saw action in all four preseason games.
Defensive tackle Jordan Phillips made the Miami Dolphins’ roster. The fifth-round pick is expected to make his NFL debut against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 7.
Safety Glen Miller was released by the Kansas City Chiefs. The undrafted rookie made five tackles during preseason.
Wide receiver Kaden Prather was placed on waivers by the Buffalo Bills and went unclaimed. He was then reverted back to the team’s injured reserve and is now released. The seventh-round pick battled a hamstring injury during preseason and only appeared in one game.
Safety Dante Trader Jr. made the Dolphins. He dealt with a soft tissue during preseason but could make his debut against the Colts.
* Offensive guard Spencer Anderson made the Pittsburgh Steelers as a reserve. Having played in all preseason games, he will begin his third season against the New York Jets.
* Offensive lineman Corey Bullock made the Baltimore Ravens as a depth piece. He impressed during preseason after spending 2024 on the team’s practice squad. Bullock went undrafted last year and now will make his NFL debut against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football on Sept. 7.
* Linebacker Josh Woods made the Atlanta Falcons. He had seven tackles in preseason and will begin his seventh season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
* Offensive lineman Gottlieb Ayedze was waived by the Las Vegas Raiders.
* Safety Beau Brade was waived by the Baltimore Ravens.
* Offensive lineman Jaelyn Duncan was waived by the Tennessee Titans.
* Offensive lineman Michael Dunn was waived by the San Francisco 49ers. He had signed with the team initially on Aug. 20.
* Wide receiver Rakim Jarrett was waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
* Wide receiver Jeshaun Jones was waived by the Minnesota Vikings. He had 100 receiving yards this preseason, and was released despite open competition in Minnesota’s receiver room.
* Tight end Tyler Mabry was waived by the Carolina Panthers. He had dealt with a hamstring injury and was previously on injured reserve back on Aug. 18.
* Defensive end Durell Nchami was waived by the Indianapolis Colts.
* New York Giants cornerback Deonte Banks competed for a starting job during preseason but missed two games due to an injury. He will enter his third season against the Washington Commanders.
* Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Jakorian Bennett was competing for a starting job after being traded from the Raiders. Bennett starts his third season against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday Night Football.
* Indianapolis Colts safety Nick Cross dealt with a hip injury during training camp. However, he began activities last week to be ready for his fourth season Week 1 against the Dolphins.
* New York Jets defensive tackle Byron Cowart will start the season on injured reserve with an ankle injury. By being on short term IR, Cowart could make the debut of his fifth season in Week 5 against the Dallas Cowboys.
* New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs did not play in the preseason due to rest. He will begin his 11th season and make his debut for the Patriots against the Raiders.
* Las Vegas Raiders right tackle DJ Glaze earned a starting job in preseason. Glaze begins his second season against the Patriots.
* Buffalo Bills running back Ty Johnson only appeared in one preseason game. Johnson enters his seventh season against the Ravens.
* Chicago Bears wideout D.J. Moore begins his eighth season against the Vikings.
* Tennessee Titans tight end Chig Okonkwo begins his fourth season against the Denver Broncos.
* San Francisco 49ers defensive end Sam Okuayinonu battled a groin injury during preseason and played in the final week. He enters his third season against the Seattle Seahawks.
* Arizona Cardinals kicker Chad Ryland enters his third season against the New Orleans Saints.
* Jacksonville Jaguars safety Darnell Savage Jr. appeared in one preseason game. Savage begins his seventh year against the Carolina Panthers.
* Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Tarheeb Still was in the mix for a starting job during preseason. Still starts his second season with a game against the Chiefs.
The players waived after roster cuts have a chance to sign and stay with their current team or join another team’s practice squad.
There are now 20 Maryland alums on active NFL rosters entering the regular season.
The NFL season will open with the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles in a Thursday Night Football game on Sept. 4.
