Alexander Isak's return is officially confirmed, but not with Newcastle United

As he continues to refuse to play for Newcastle United, Alexander Isak is poised to make his comeback.

The 25-year-old has not played since Newcastle United’s final game of the 2024/25 season, having spent pre-season away from his Toon teammates.

Despite being fully fit, Alexander Isak is refusing to play for the Magpies. He has missed the opening two Premier League games of the season, amid his desire to join Liverpool.

There was a meeting between the player and the Newcastle United owners on Monday, but it is yet to trigger a return to Eddie Howe’s squad. Instead, Isak still wants to leave Newcastle.

It is unclear when he will play club football again, but his international future is now clear.

Alexander Isak named in Sweden squad

Amid Isak’s decision not to play for Newcastle, there were questions asked regarding what it could mean for his international career.

Jon Dahl Tomasson now has the answers, having confirmed his Sweden squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo.

It has been announced that Isak is going to be part of the Sweden squad, as they embark on their quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Newcastle’s most expensive player ever is poised to play for the first time since May, with Sweden due to face Slovenia on 5th September followed by Kosovo on 8th September.

Tomasson recently spoke about Isak’s situation, describing the striker as ‘professional’.

Upon selecting Isak, Tomasson told Sweden’s official website: “I am very happy that Alexander Isak wants to be in the squad, he is a huge player.

“The situation he is in is not perfect and he has not trained with the team. But he is a player who can decide matches and he wants to be part of our squad, the World Cup is important for Alexander Isak.”

Alexander Isak set to be reunited with Newcastle United teammates

At the start of the summer, Isak was part of the Toon group that travelled to Austria for a pre-season training camp.

However, that was the last time he trained alongside his Newcastle United teammates before removing himself from the group and becoming unavailable for selection.

That is set to change, with Isak named in the Sweden squad alongside Anthony Elanga and Emil Krafth.

All three of Newcastle’s Swedish players will be in action, as Krafth and Elanga get set to be reunited with Isak.
