Leeds United suffered a shock defeat in the Carabao Cup as they were chucked out by Sheffield Wednesday on penalties.

Jayden Bogle shone for Daniel Farke’s side, scoring their only goal in the 1-1 draw against a bunch of teenagers.

Karl Darlow was at fault for the Sheffield Wednesday opener, but was helpless to prevent defeat as the Peacocks missed all of their penalties.

The match between the two clubs was played under the cover of controversy due to Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership of the South Yorkshire outfit.

Where will the finances from Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds United go?

Leeds played in an unfamiliar environment against Sheffield Wednesday as the Owls supporters boycotted the match.

Now, football finance expert Dan Plumley – speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News – has provided insight on the Carabao Cup clash and what it means for Chansiri, as thousands of away fans turned up.

“It’s different from league matches with cup games, so the tickets are split more equally,” he said.

“There’s still a distribution that goes back to the Football League in this case, but the club splits the tickets more so than they do in the league.

“So, actually, the Leeds fans who attended that game wouldn’t go to Chansiri anyway, but it would be what they are spending in the ground, etc.

Wednesday are without a league win this season

The Owls’ transfer embargo has been lifted

Players have not been paid their wages

“And we’ve seen Sheffield Wednesday ask other clubs not to spend in the ground as an example already this season in the home game that they’ve had, so it’s not going to benefit Chantiri directly.

“Those Leeds fans went into that game, but certainly from a Sheffield Wednesday side of things, the club called for a boycott of all home fans because obviously that’s their money into that club.

“So it’d be an interesting one to see how it plays out, but that’s the way the ticket sales work and the split in that competition, so Leeds will benefit financially with their fans who travelled, no matter what happens.”

Sheffield Wednesday embarrass Leeds with shock Hillsborough win

Given what is going on at Hillsborough, the Elland Road club were expected to progress in the Carabao Cup.

While Farke used the opportunity to rotate, he still fielded a strong team for the clash.

The match allowed the German to play fringe players, with the likes of Sean Longstaff, Sebastiaan Bornauw, and Jack Harrison included.

Of course, the defeat to the Owls is not a catastrophe, but some supporters are understandably angry.
