When is the 2025/26 Champions League league phase draw?](https://www.mancity.com/news/mens/champions-league-2025-26-league-phase-explainer-63889371)
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City enter the competition this evening, when the third round draw is made.
The draw will be made in two stages tonight, either side of Manchester United’s second round trip to Grimsby.
Ahead of the 20:00 (UK) kick-off at Blundell Park, here is a reminder of the updated format to the historic competition.
City will be looking to win the competition for a ninth time, with our last Carabao Cup triumph in 2021 when City beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Wembley, collecting the trophy for a fourth successive year.
The third round stage sees the introduction of all Premier League teams competing in Europe this season.
Clubs participating in the UEFA Champions League cannot be drawn against teams competing in the Europa League in the third round.
As a result, we will avoid Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
Meanwhile, the 23 teams progressing from Round Two and Crystal Palace – who are in the UEFA Conference League – are not affected at this stage.
Therefore, Champions League and Europa League clubs will be placed in bowl one and drawn against one of the remaining 24 teams in bowl two.
A pre-draw will take place ahead of Grimsby v Manchester United this evening to determine whether each of the eight clubs in bowl one will be playing home or away, including City, who are ball number 15.
The main draw will then take place following the full-time whistle at Blundell Park.
Round Three of the Carabao Cup will be played across the weeks beginning 15 and 22 September to accommodate teams also taking part in European fixtures.
