Werder Bremen reached an agreement with the player weeks back, but have been left frustrated by Leeds delaying the negotiations.
Leeds are finally ready to move Schmidt on, but the first red herring arrived on Tuesday, when the German club finalised the signing of full-back Yukinari Sugawara on loan from Southampton.
However, it emerged that the German club were still in talks with Leeds to sign the defender for a deal worth £3m this summer.
But according to German daily Bild, there are serious reservations in Bremen about trying to sign the Leeds defender before the end of the window.
The German are club are having second thoughts about signing Schmidt after securing the deal to sign Sugawara from Southampton.
Werder Bremen are considering walking away from the negotiations, which could leave Schmidt in limbo just days before the transfer window closes.
The deal stalled earlier in the window as Leeds were looking for his replacement, but now Bremen are showing reluctance to sign Schmidt this summer.
