Throw-ins back in focus for Hurzeler as Albion take on Oxford

And they will have cropped up again in preparation for the Carabao Cup trip to Oxford United.

Fabian Hurzeler was unhappy with how his side defended a Fulham throw which led to a shot which led to the corner which brought their last-gasp equaliser.

On Sunday, Everton launched the move for their first goal from a throw-in in their own right-back area.

Hurzeler mentioned that in his press conference soon after the game.

It felt very much like it had been a focus in the changing room inquest given the way Yasin Ayari referred to it in his BBC Radio Sussex interview.

Now, with Albion poised for cup action, throw-ins have had another mention.

In his eve-of-match press conference, Hurzeler said of Oxford: “They are very compact, they change their shape.

“I think in the last game against Birmingham they played in a 5-4-1.

“They don’t give away a lot of chances. They are difficult to outplay.

“They’re very dangerous after long balls, they are dangerous and within every restart.

“They have long throw-ins. They have a lot of players who are quite a big, tall size.

“So we have to be careful and we have to defend the restarts quite well. We have to be good regarding the long balls and we have to be tough in in the personal duels.”

You have to go back a bit but Oxford are among the smaller clubs to have enjoyed a day of Wembley glory in the League Cup.

That was in 1986 and other success stories have included Norwich, Luton and, more recently, Swansea City.

Even Manchester City were a bit of an outlier when they won it in 1976.

And then came Newcastle’s long-awaited silverware last term.

Hurzeler said: “I think, of course, the Carabao Cup has not that tradition, for example, like the FA Cup but we saw it last season with Newcastle that if you win a title, it’s still something special.”
