Ruben Amorim is set to utilise his squad depth as Manchester United face off against League Two side Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup tonight at 8pm. The Reds are heading to Blundell Park with a victory in their sights for the first time this season, following a loss to Arsenal and a stalemate with Fulham.
This marks the first time in over a decade that Amorim's men are entering the competition at the second round stage, having missed out on European qualification. A shake-up within the United starting line-up is anticipated for their journey to Lincolnshire, with Benjamin Sesko, Kobbie Mainoo and Ayden Heaven all tipped to make an appearance.
However, Wednesday night's encounter won't be a walk in the park - Grimsby have kicked off their League Two campaign strongly, avoiding defeat in their first five league matches. One player who may have been eyeing a role at Grimsby is Noussair Mazraoui.
The defender has been sidelined for United since the friendly match against Leeds United in July, with no further details provided about his injury. "Maybe he's going to return next week, we will see," said Amorim.
"But he's near. We are just finishing some drills with him to be sure he is not going to have another problem."
Lisandro Martinez is currently the only long-term casualty for United - having suffered an ACL injury in February. He has been on the mend since successfully undergoing surgery for the issue.
United could utilise their squad depth and give season debuts to several players, including Sesko, Mainoo and Heaven. Goalkeeper Andre Onana is also eager to reclaim his place in the starting line-up.
After an injury setback during pre-season, Onana was omitted from the matchday squad against Arsenal, only to return to the substitutes' bench at Craven Cottage. Despite the impending transfer of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, the Cameroonian shot-stopper is still vying for his No.1 spot.
Altay Bayindir has started United's first two games of the season, conceding one goal in both games. Lammens' arrival would see him become the club's fourth senior goalkeeper with Tom Heaton making up the department.
Lammens missed Antwerp's win over KV Mechelen on Sunday, amid speculation over his future. It's understood that United will pay £16million plus add-ons with the Belgian signing a five-year contract.
