'You can't ever': Alan Shearer shares what he honestly thinks about William Osula after Anthony Gordon's suspension

William Osula is Newcastle United’s only available striker at the moment.

The Magpies have Alexander Isak but he is refusing to play, while Callum Wilson was allowed to leave the club earlier in the summer.

Anthony Gordon has started up front in each of Newcastle United’s last two games, but the England international was given a red card, which means he will not be available for the next three fixtures.

That makes young Osula very likely to start when Newcastle take on Leeds United on Saturday.

Alan Shearer delivers his verdict on William Osula at Newcastle United

Osula joined Newcastle United from Sheffield United in the summer of 2024.

The 22-year-old has only started three games for the Toon – one in the Carabao Cup and two in the FA Cup – but he has made 18 more appearances off the bench.

Osula has scored three times for Newcastle, the last of which came against Liverpool in St James’ Park on Monday night.

Alan Shearer was in attendance to watch the game, and he appears to have liked what he saw from the young Dane.

However, the Newcastle United legend still feels Osula is very raw and has a lot to learn to be successful at the highest level.

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Shearer said: “I think he’s very raw. I think there’s still learning, still sort of getting used to the pace and what have you.

“But I think because of the situation now with Anthony Gordon missing three games, he will probably have to play or start on Saturday against Leeds, and this will be a good opportunity for him.

“Still plenty to learn, but you can’t ever fault his attitude. I think he will give as good as he has got and will make it difficult for defenders. But still got work to do.”

Should Eddie Howe start William Osula vs Leeds?

Eddie Howe deserves a lot of sympathy for everything he has had to go through this summer.

After winning a trophy and qualifying for the Champions League at the end of last season, he would’ve hoped for a big summer, but things have just not gone to plan.

With Isak not expected to feature, Gordon suspended, and even Joelinton injured, Howe has no choice but to start Osula against Leeds United on Saturday.

The Dane has never started a game in the Premier League before for the Toon, so this will be a great opportunity to show the world what he’s all about.

After his goal against Liverpool on Monday, we think he deserves the opportunity.
