News

The Carabao Cup third round draw takes place tonight.

An official Newcastle United announcement (see below) giving full details.

Ball numbers have been allocated and United are number 17.

Four more ties to be played this Wednesday night to give us the last quartet of clubs in the draw.

**Newcastle United officially [announcement](https://www.newcastleunited.com/en/news/carabao-cup-third-round-draw-details-confirmed) – 27 August 2025:**

_Newcastle United will be ball number 17 in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup third round draw._

_The Magpies – holders of the trophy, having won the competition thanks to March’s unforgettable 2-1 win over Liverpool in last season’s final at Wembley – enter along with the eight other Premier League clubs currently competing in UEFA competitions (Champions League, Europa League and Conference League)._

_Eddie Howe’s side are one of 32 sides in the draw, with 23 of those having secured their place with victories in the second round._

_The EFL have implemented a number of additional conditions for the third round draw, as a result of the expansion of the European competition calendar._

_Fixtures will take place across two weeks (beginning Monday 15th and Monday 22nd September), with fixtures in the Champions League (week beginning Monday 15th September) and Europa League (week beginning Monday 22nd September) also scheduled during this period._

_With UEFA competition fixtures unable to be rescheduled, the additional conditions mean that clubs participating in the Champions League or Europa League meet each other in the third round and therefore both teams drawn in each tie will be able to fulfil the fixture in one of the allocated weeks. Crystal Palace’s potential Conference League participation would start in October and as such have no scheduling impact on the third round._

_The EFL have confirmed that two separate bowls will be utilised for Wednesday evening’s draw, which will take place on Sky Sports after to Grimsby Town’s tie with Manchester United. One bowl consists of the eight Champions League and Europa League clubs, and one consisting of the remaining 24 clubs._

_As the balls will be split across two pots, a pre-draw – which will take place in the build-up to the Mariners’ clash with the Red Devils – will be required to determine whether each of the eight teams competing in European competition will be playing at home or away._

_Once the first eight ties featuring the eight teams in European competition have been drawn, the remaining eight ties will then be drawn from the second bowl only._
