John Aldridge says Liverpool now have a player who’s so good it’s ‘frightening’

Liverpool have managed to have a perfect start to their 2025-26 Premier League campaign.

The Reds have won both of their opening games, even if it was a bit of a struggle at times.

Indeed, some members of Arne Slot’s starting XI weren’t up to par against the Magpies, but with the way things seem to be panning out, it still feels like their team needs to get used to one another.

However, players such as Hugo Ekitike and Dominik Szoboszlai are just some of Liverpool’s first-team squad who have managed to prove their worth this season, but after their 3-2 win against Newcastle, there’s another player who’s emerged as a bit of a hero.

John Aldridge believes Rio Ngumoha’s potential is “frightening”

Liverpool have had to rely on a couple of late goals to earn all six points against Newcastle and Bournemouth thus far.

There were times throughout both games when it felt like Slot’s men were set to lose, but somehow, they’ve managed to add six points to their Premier League tally.

And, after Rio Ngumoha’s 100th-minute winner at St James’ Park on Monday evening, former Liverpool legend John Aldridge shared his thoughts on how good the 16-year-old actually is.

“I have been watching him since we got him from Chelsea. He has got so much ability it’s frightening,” he said to the BBC Sport website.

Liverpool still need to sign another attacker this summer

Even though Liverpool want to create a path into the first team for Ngumoha, they still need to sign another senior attacker.

At the moment, Liverpool only have four senior attacking options among their ranks, and if one or two of them get injured, they’ll find themselves in a whole world of trouble.

Indeed, players such as Florian Wirtz and Harvey Elliott can be used in attack if needed, but if we’re being honest, both players perform much better when used as midfielders.

Several names have been linked with an Anfield switch this summer, such as Alexander Isak and Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.

Alexander Isak 42 27 6

Rodrygo 54 14 11

The 2024-25 seasons of Alexander Isak and Rodrygo in numbers.

While both would be rather impressive additions, each would cost Liverpool a hefty chunk of change and would perhaps not allow them to sign a new defender such as Marc Guehi.

And, while this wouldn’t be the end of the world as they now have four senior centre-backs, the recent form that Ibrahima Konate has been in has left a lot to be desired.

At the moment, nothing is set in stone regarding what’s likely to happen with Liverpool’s first-team squad this summer, but on the face of things, one or two additions are still needed.
