When you look at what separates contenders from all the other teams in the NBA, it’s not only about star power but about the bench. Rotations tend to tighten in the postseason, and injuries can derail a season overnight, so the best sixth man or key reserve often decides games that matter most.
Having a reliable bench player isn’t just a luxury anymore; it’s a necessity because key players who can make an impact without being a starter are landscape-changing. That’s why we’re ranking the best bench player on every NBA team for the 2025-26 season, and it might yield some interesting conversations.
Atlanta Hawks - Nickeil Alexander-Walker

2024-25 Averages: 9.4 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 2.7 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.4 BPG
Nickeil Alexander-Walker gives the Hawks exactly what they need off the bench: versatility. His ability to defend multiple positions, hit timely threes, and handle secondary playmaking duties makes him the Hawks’ most valuable reserve.
While his averages may not jump off the page, Alexander-Walker's two-way presence will stabilize the second unit and allow Trae Young to rest without the offense completely stalling. Out of all the secondary pickups in the 2025 offseason, this one has to rank up there.
Boston Celtics - Payton Pritchard

2024-25 Averages: 14.3 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 3.5 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.2 BPG
Now, Payton Pritchard might start, but bringing him off the bench could make the Celtics particularly more difficult to handle next season. Pritchard is the definition of a microwave scorer, and Boston leans on his energy when the offense bogs down.
Averaging over 14 points per game as the Sixth Man of the Year, he’s not just a spark plug but a consistent bench weapon capable of stretching defenses with his shooting and pushing the tempo. On a Celtics roster that will need as many scorers as they can get with Jayson Tatum out, his production makes him one of the best backup guards in the league.
Brooklyn Nets - Ziaire Williams

2024-25 Averages: 10.0 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 1.3 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.4 BPG
Ziaire Williams might have finally found a home in Brooklyn as a dependable bench wing. His length, athleticism, and defensive instincts give the Nets a valuable rotation piece, while his offensive game has quietly improved.
Averaging double figures, Williams provides a steady scoring option on the wing and shows flashes of being more than just a role player.
Charlotte Hornets - Tre Mann

2024-25 Averages: 14.1 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 3.0 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Tre Mann will likely thrive in Charlotte’s second unit as a scoring guard who can create his own shot behind LaMelo Ball. His 14 points per game (though in only five games) showcase his ability to take over stretches offensively, especially when Ball sits.
Mann’s handle, confidence, and shooting touch give the Hornets one of the more underrated bench weapons in the league. Hopefully, Mann can stay healthy and find a way to contribute offensively as soon as possible because the Hornets could use as many scorers as possible.
Chicago Bulls - Kevin Huerter

2024-25 Averages: 9.9 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 2.3 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Kevin Huerter’s shooting and playmaking make him the Bulls’ most reliable bench contributor, even if he didn't have the best campaign last season. His natural ability to space the floor next to Chicago’s primary scorers adds balance, and his veteran experience provides stability for a young roster.
Even if we expect his numbers to be modest in 2025-26, Huerter’s skill set perfectly complements a team that desperately needs perimeter consistency and some experience throughout the season.
Cleveland Cavaliers - Max Strus

2024-25 Averages: 9.4 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 3.2 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.2 BPG
Likely relegated to the bench in favor of De'Andre Hunter, Max Strus remains one of the league’s best glue guys, giving Cleveland toughness, floor spacing, and defensive grit. He also has Finals experience from his days in Miami, so that is also a major plus.
Strus' ability to hit big shots in big moments is exactly why the Cavaliers value him. His energy and leadership carry the second unit, making him a solid option in a rotation built around star power, who can create open looks for role players.
Dallas Mavericks - P.J. Washington

2024-25 Averages: 14.7 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 2.3 APG, 1.1 SPG, 1.1 BPG
P.J. Washington’s two-way versatility makes him a luxury for Dallas to bring off the bench, especially since Cooper Flagg will likely be inserted into the starting lineup in 2025-26. Averaging nearly 15 points and 8 rebounds last season, he provides frontcourt scoring, rebounding, and defensive flexibility.
Washington’s ability to guard multiple positions and knock down shots makes him a critical piece in the Mavericks’ quest to surround Flagg, Kyrie Irving, and Anthony Davis with reliable support. There is a great possibility that Washington could be in the running for Sixth Man of the Year as well.
Denver Nuggets - Bruce Brown

2024-25 Averages: 8.3 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 2.0 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.2 BPG
Bruce Brown has returned to his sweet spot: a do-it-all reserve who thrives in multiple roles for a title-contender. His toughness, perimeter defense, and ability to attack off the dribble bring energy to Denver’s second unit.
While his scoring numbers will be modest, his impact is massive, as Brown remains one of the most dependable bench players in the NBA, which is why the Nuggets couldn't wait to bring him back. Whether or not Brown can have the same impact for the team next season as he did in 2022-23 remains to be seen, but the player is truly back where he belongs.
Detroit Pistons - Caris LeVert

2024-25 Averages: 12.1 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 3.4 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.5 BPG
Caris LeVert is Detroit’s brand new instant-offense option, capable of creating his own shot and carrying stretches for the bench unit, and we love this pickup. Averaging 12.1 points a night last season, he gives the Pistons a veteran scorer who can take pressure off Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey.
His streaky shooting can change games, making him the Pistons’ most reliable reserve heading into 2025-26. We love how the Pistons are stacking up with talent because they can realistically make a run to try to get out of the first round next season.

2024-25 Averages: 11.7 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 3.4 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.2 BPG
Brandin Podziemski has become a Warriors fan favorite with his hustle, IQ, and all-around game, and he is showing improvements across the board as well. Averaging 12 points, 5 boards, and 3 assists last season, he’s the connective tissue for Golden State’s bench.
His willingness to defend, rebound, and make smart plays ensures that the Warriors don’t lose their identity when Stephen Curry sits. The key for Podziemski to show major improvement and get in the running for Sixth Man of the Year is to boost his three-point percentage to above 38% and show a little more consistency when it comes to generating shots.
Houston Rockets - Tari Eason

2024-25 Averages: 12.0 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.5 APG, 1.7 SPG, 0.9 BPG
Tari Eason will be the heart of Houston’s bench with his relentless energy and defensive motor, and he hopes to fight for a starting spot ahead of Jabari Smith Jr as well. Still, looking ahead, Eason will look to be the difference-maker off the bench for the Rockets.
He crashes the glass, deflects passes, and makes life miserable for opposing scorers while still averaging a solid 12 points and 6 rebounds. Eason’s versatility and effort make him one of the league’s premier second-unit disruptors, and he has a chance to completely own that unit.
Indiana Pacers - Bennedict Mathurin

2024-25 Averages: 16.1 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 1.9 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Bennedict Mathurin is more than just a bench player; he’s a future star who happens to come off the pine for the Indiana Pacers until further notice. Mathurin may end up being a starter at some point, especially with Tyrese Haliburton out for the season, but he will be the sixth man for now.
With 16 points per game last year, his scoring punch gives Indiana one of the most dangerous second units in the NBA. Mathurin’s athleticism, confidence, and shot-making ability make him a weapon who could start for most teams and could be a difference-maker in 2025-26.
Los Angeles Clippers - Chris Paul

2024-25 Averages: 8.8 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 7.4 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Chris Paul may be in the twilight of his career, but his playmaking still changes the game off the bench for the Los Angeles Clippers. There isn't a better spot for the all-time great point guard heading into his final season, and we hope Paul can stay healthy and available to make a difference.
As a backup floor general for James Harden, he provides steady leadership, orchestrates the offense, and sets the tone for teammates. His ability to control tempo ensures that the Clippers’ second unit doesn’t miss a beat, and it will be very interesting to see how arguably the greatest player in franchise history performs in one last run at a title.

2024-25 Averages: 9.0 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 3.2 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.3 BPG
The latest acquisition by the Los Angeles Lakers, Marcus Smart, brings his trademark toughness and defensive edge to the second unit. We think he's a great pickup by Rob Pelinka because Smart can guard positions 1-3, make smart plays, and hit timely shots to add a layer of grit that Los Angeles needs.
While his offensive numbers are modest and he isn't the same player who once won Defensive Player of the Year, his leadership and defensive presence make him invaluable off the bench for a team led by superstars Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
Memphis Grizzlies - Santi Aldama

2024-25 Averages: 12.5 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 2.9 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.4 BPG
Santi Aldama has developed into a versatile forward who thrives in Memphis’ bench role, and he has flown under the radar over the past two seasons. His blend of size, skill, and shooting touch allows him to space the floor while still rebounding and defending effectively.
With 12.5 points and 6.4 boards a night last season, Aldama gives the Grizzlies consistent two-way production in what seems to be a rebuilding year. Aldama won't be much of a threat to challenge Jaren Jackson Jr's place in the starting lineup, but that's what makes him particularly effective.
Miami Heat - Jaime Jaquez Jr.

2024-25 Averages: 8.6 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 2.5 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.2 BPG
Jaime Jaquez Jr. embodies Miami Heat Culture perfectly with his hustle, IQ, and toughness. While his scoring dipped last season after a terrific rookie campaign, his all-around impact makes him Miami’s best bench piece, even ahead of Nikola Jovic.
Jaquez does the dirty work, makes smart plays, and brings energy that often shifts momentum in Miami’s favor. We expect the youngster to have a better campaign in 2025-26 because getting his scoring to over 12 PPG could boost the Heat back into the playoffs.
Milwaukee Bucks - Bobby Portis

2024-25 Averages: 13.9 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 2.1 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.5 BPG
Bobby Portis is still one of the NBA’s elite bench bigs, which is why the Milwaukee Bucks brought him back to be a backup to Myles Turner. With nearly 14 points and 8 rebounds per game last season, he provides Milwaukee with toughness, rebounding, and instant offense.
Especially with Brook Lopez no longer with the team, Portis' ability to stretch the floor while bringing relentless energy will make him a fan favorite and a playoff performer for a team currently in limbo. Hopefully, the Bucks can remain competitive and make the most out of Bobby's prime.
Minnesota Timberwolves - Naz Reid

2024-25 Averages: 14.2 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 2.3 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.9 BPG
Naz Reid had a slight decline last year, but he is still one of the best bench players in the entire league as the 2023-24 Sixth Man of the Year. His 14 points and 6 rebounds per game give the Timberwolves starting-level production from the second unit.
Reid’s mix of inside scoring, three-point shooting, and rim protection makes him a matchup nightmare for opposing benches. Depending on how Rudy Gobert looks next season, perhaps Reid can even challenge for a starting role at some point.
New Orleans Pelicans - Trey Murphy III

2024-25 Averages: 21.2 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 3.5 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.7 BPG
Trey Murphy III might be the most overqualified bench player in the NBA. Averaging over 21 points per game, his scoring, length, and shooting make him a borderline star, but he might find it hard to start ahead of Dejounte Murray, Jordan Poole, and Herb Jones.
The fact that he comes off the bench only highlights New Orleans’ depth, but Murphy’s talent ensures he’s the Pelicans’ most dangerous reserve weapon until he gets thrust into the starting lineup, or even traded for future assets.
New York Knicks - Miles McBride

2024-25 Averages: 9.5 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 2.9 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Miles McBride gives the New York Knicks a defensive-minded guard who plays with intensity every possession. While his offensive numbers aren't too impressive right now, his athleticism and fire-starting presence make him an essential bench piece.
As a sixth man ahead of Jordan Clarkson, McBride’s effort and toughness fit perfectly with New York’s blue-collar identity. Hopefully, McBride can take on a bigger role under new head coach Mike Brown.

2024-25 Averages: 7.1 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.6 SPG, 0.6 BPG
All-NBA Defender Alex Caruso’s defense and winning intangibles make him a dream bench piece for the OKC Thunder, and he was certainly a difference-maker in last season's playoff run. He guards the opponent’s best perimeter player, makes smart rotations, and sets the tone with his hustle.
While his offensive production can be limited and his shot can come and go, Caruso’s defensive impact is undeniable, making him the Thunder’s top bench player and one of the best sixth men in the NBA. We don't expect anything to change in 2025-26 because Caruso has proved himself on two championship-winning teams already.
Orlando Magic - Jonathan Isaac

2024-25 Averages: 5.4 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 0.6 APG, 0.9 SPG, 1.1 BPG
Jonathan Isaac gives Orlando a defensive anchor off the bench, protecting the rim and guarding multiple positions. Though his offense is limited, his length and shot-blocking provide the Magic with a unique defensive weapon.
When healthy, Isaac changes the game defensively, making him the most impactful bench player on the roster, slightly ahead of the talented Mo Wagner. The Magic love defenders who play hard on both ends, so Isaac fits that profile perfectly heading into 2025-26.
Philadelphia 76ers - Jared McCain

2024-25 Averages: 15.3 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 2.6 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.0 BPG
Jared McCain was carving out a big role for Philadelphia last season before an injury sidelined him for the majority of the campaign, averaging over 15 points per game off the bench. His shooting, confidence, and ability to create offense give the 76ers a dynamic scoring threat.
As a sixth man, McCain’s rise makes him one of the league’s most exciting young reserves. Until the Sixers decide to pull the plug on Paul George in the starting lineup, McCain will be the primary offensive option off the bench as a sixth man.
Phoenix Suns - Grayson Allen

2024-25 Averages: 10.6 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 2.1 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Grayson Allen, even if he might no longer be valued by the team, provides the Suns with shooting, toughness, and playoff experience from the bench. His ability to knock down threes and play pesky perimeter defense makes him a valuable rotation piece for a title-contending team rather than a rebuilding one.
Regardless, Allen may not be flashy, but his reliable production gives Phoenix balance behind Devin Booker and Jalen Green. It is very likely that Allen gets traded from the Suns at some point next season, but until then, the player will come off the bench.
Portland Trail Blazers - Shaedon Sharpe

2024-25 Averages: 18.5 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 2.8 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.2 BPG
Shaedon Sharpe is a budding star who just happens to come off Portland’s bench until head coach Chauncey Billups makes an early-season decision. With nearly 19 points per game last season, he’s already one of the most explosive reserves in the league who could start for the Trail Blazers.
His athleticism and scoring ability make him the Trail Blazers’ most dangerous weapon, and he looks like a future franchise cornerstone. Hopefully, he can hold things down until Damian Lillard recovers from an Achilles injury in 2026-27.
Sacramento Kings - Dennis Schroder

2024-25 Averages: 13.1 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 5.4 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.2 BPG
Dennis Schroder brings instant speed and playmaking to the Kings' second unit, which means the franchise probably doesn't need to make the move for Russell Westbrook at all. His ability to break down defenses, create for teammates, and provide scoring makes him a stabilizing presence off the bench.
Schroder’s veteran savvy gives the Kings much-needed leadership since De'Aaron Fox is no longer on the squad, and Zach LaVine will likely take on the primary role in the starting lineup. Things could change, and Schroder could be placed as a starter, but we see him as a sixth man to start the 2025-26 campaign.

2024-25 Averages: 12.7 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 1.6 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Despite being dangled in some trade rumors over the past few seasons, Keldon Johnson is a proven scorer who provides San Antonio with a physical wing presence off the bench. Averaging nearly 13 points per game, he can bully smaller defenders and stretch the floor with his shooting.
His experience and toughness make him the Spurs’ most dependable reserve, even if rookie Dylan Harper looks to challenge him on that front. Until we see how Harper performs in his rookie season, Johnson will be the more experienced and consistent option.

Gradey Dick will likely take a leap as Toronto’s key bench scorer in 2025-26 after averaging over 14 points per game last season. With Brandon Ingram coming on board, Dick's position will automatically shift.
His shooting touch, improved playmaking, and willingness to defend have made him far more than just a specialist. Dick’s growth gives the Raptors a young, reliable offensive weapon who could continue improving his all-around game as a sixth man.

Keyonte George has to embrace his role as Utah’s top scorer off the bench, even if he put up nearly 17 points and 6 assists per game. Isiaha Collier will likely command the starting position because of his natural playmaking skills, meaning George needs to be a consistent bench scorer.
His shot creation and confidence give the Jazz an offensive punch that few benches can match. George’s growth is a bright spot in Utah’s rebuild and cements him as their best reserve heading into 2025-26.

Former All-Star Khris Middleton may be coming off the bench now, but his skill set and experience will make him Washington’s top reserve. Averaging nearly 12 points and 4 assists, he gives the Wizards a steady scoring and playmaking presence.
He could be traded at some point since the Wizards are tanking, but Middleton’s veteran leadership adds stability to a young and rebuilding team until further notice. For his sake, we hope Middleton lands on a contending roster anyway.
