Sam Mather could leave Manchester United on a permanent transfer before the deadline.
Mather is set to leave United for the next chapter of his development and the youngster is likely to move abroad, having recieved interest from clubs in Germany, Sweden and Turkey.
The 20-year-old's qualities are considered as an ideal fit for European football and it's hoped a permanent transfer will be arranged. However, Mather could leave in a loan deal, with an obligation to buy included.
Mather has predominantly played on the left wing during his time in the academy, but his preferred position is the No.10 role and the player is understood to be keen to play regular competitive football.
United agreed an eleventh-hour loan move for Mather to join Tranmere Rovers in the January transfer window, but Nigel Adkins was sacked just a few weeks after the youngster's arrival.
Although Mather's contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer of 2027, there is a hunger on the player's behalf for regular starts after outgrowing academy football with the Under-21s.
Last year, Mather signed a new three-year contract. He was given fresh terms on the back of a promising season, and being involved on the pre-season tour of the United States.
The U21s are set to play a behind-closed-doors friendly against Bolton today and some youngsters whose futures are uncertain ahead of the transfer deadline will be involved in the game.
Harry Amass, Rhys Bennett, Ethan Williams, Ethan Ennis and Gabriele Biancheri could all leave before the deadline.
