Free school supplies, basketball clinic at Staten Island back-to-school event

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Local students will receive free school supplies and basketball training at a back-to-school community event in Mariners Harbor this week. The event is planned for Friday, Aug. 29, at The Big Park on Grandview Avenue and Continental Place.

This free family event, hosted by Councilmember Kamillah M. Hanks in partnership with the Madison Square Garden Family of Companies, will feature a live DJ, refreshments, ice cream provided by The Grace Foundation food truck and on-site health screenings by CareConnect. MSG will also be providing young students with school supplies, including Knicks backpacks and Rangers notebooks.

“With a new school year around the corner, it’s so important that our kids feel prepared and supported,” said Hanks

One of the key features of the day will be the Jr. Knicks Basketball Clinic, where young local athletes will be able to show off their skills and receive mentorship from coaching staff.

“It is crucial that the families in our local communities feel prepared and excited for the school year ahead. Through our Jr. Knicks clinic, we aim to teach the youth valuable lessons, such as teamwork, while providing them with the opportunity to experience fun basketball training,” said Knicks Alumnus John Starks.

Local organizations supporting the event include the Dr. Theodore Atlas Foundation, Uncle Chase Foundation, and MakerParkRadio.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the basketball clinic starting at 1 p.m. Those interested in the clinic are encouraged to pre-register at https://jrknicks.leagueapps.com/events/4699251-jr.-knicks-clinic-with-cm-hanks .
