Green Bay Packers Keep Unusual Streak Alive After QB Decision on Tuesday

Just like all the other NFL teams, the Green Bay Packers trimmed their roster down to a 53-man composition on Tuesday. The Packers let go of several names, including a pair of quarterbacks in Sean Clifford and Taylor Elgersma.

That leaves Green Bay without insurance behind backup signal-caller Malik Willis, who joined the Packers in 2024 via a trade with the Tennessee Titans.

However, having only two quarterbacks on the roster past the final cut day isn’t unusual for the Packers.

ViaWes Hodkiewicz, senior editor of the Packers’ official website:

It’s the fifth year in a row the Packers kept only two quarterbacks on the initial 53-man roster after releasing both Sean Clifford and Taylor Elgersma. The last time they carried three into a season was 2020 (Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love and Tim Boyle).

Given that trend, it made sense to expect Green Bay to part ways with Clifford and Elgersma. Both quarterbacks could still reunite with the Packers, probably as part of the team’s practice squad. Clifford was cut by the Packers in 2024 before being signed to their practice squad.

The decision to roll with just two quarterbacks can also be interpreted as a sign of trust on the part of Green Bay in Willis. The former Liberty Flames star quarterback joined the Packers last year without training camp experience with them, but went 2-0 under center in the two games he acted as Green Bay’s temporary starter amid Jordan Love’s absence early in the 2024 campaign.

The Packers are scheduled to face the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field in Green Bay in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL regular season.
