Newcastle appoint “outstanding” Man Utd coach in major coup for club’s Academy

Back in June, Newcastle United lost Diarmuid O’Carroll to Czech side Sparta Prague after just one season at the club as our under-21 boss.

The club has been searching for his replacement ever since, and today we’ve finally received news on the man set to lead our second string for the 2025/26 season and beyond.

After being linked as a contender for the role alongside Robbie Stockdale, former Man Utd under-18 boss Adam Lawrence has now taken the job on Tyneside.

Set to start on 1st September (next Monday), the 38-year-old will come in as our new lead coach at under-21 level, with Stockdale set to work as Lawrence’s assistant.

Lawrence secured three trophies with his under-18 side over the 2023/24 campaign, winning the Premier League regional and national titles as well as the Premier League Cup, also finishing runners up in the Premier League North last season.

Reacting to his appointment, he said: “It’s a real privilege to join Newcastle United and to lead the Under-21s squad at such an exciting time for the Academy.

“I’ve always believed in creating environments where young players can grow – not just as footballers, but as people – and that is something the Academy does very well.

“The club has a clear vision for development, and I’m looking forward to working with the staff and players to help each individual take the next step in their journey.”

Academy Director Steve Harper has also commented on Lawrence’s arrival, revealing how happy he is to secure such an “outstanding young coach” after “thorough” recruitment process.

“We are delighted to welcome Adam to Newcastle United as new Under-21s Lead Coach,” said Harper.

“We have carried out a thorough recruitment process to ensure we find the right person to nurture and develop our young players, and in Adam, we have an outstanding young coach joining the club.

“His record speaks for itself but results only tell part of the story. Throughout his career, he has prioritised the individual development of the young players he has worked with, and he will play a key role in supporting our talent pathway into the first team.

“I’d also like to thank Robbie Stockdale and everyone connected with the Under-21s for their hard work and collaborative approach while we recruited into this position.”
