There are a ton of professional athletes who’ve made a living playing the sport that made them a notable name but can more than hold their own in another realm. That apparently includes Rajon Rondo, who is cooking as a flag football quarterback after wrapping up his time in the NBA.
Many people who are able to make a living as a pro athlete reach that point by essentially dedicating their lives to a particular sport from a young age. However, if you examine the “Early Life” section of the Wikipedia pages of people in that particular line of work, you’ll find a solid chunk of them were standouts in multiple disciplines when they were younger before eventually committing to the one they’re known for.
That includes Rajon Rondo, the two-time NBA champion and four-time All-Star who spent 16 seasons in the league before capping off that run when he split his time between the Lakers and the Cavaliers during the 2021-22 campaign. He may be best known for basketball, but he also held his own with the Hikes Point Lobos, a youth football team in Louisville that produced Desmond Ridder and DeVante Parker, to the point where he was inducted into their Hall of Fame.
Rondo has settled down in the area where he grew up after hanging up his basketball shoes, and he’s decided to replace them with some cleats while showing off on the gridiron as he nears his 40th birthday.
Rajon Rondo is keeping busy in retirement by torturing opponents as the quarterback for a flag football team
Rondo headed back to Kentucky after retiring and founded a Louisville-based travel team that allows him to coach his son, Rajon Rondo Jr., and the other players who recently secured the seventh-grade national title at the Middle School Championship Series in Los Angeles.
He’s also keeping busy by playing for a flag football team in a rec league organized by LXC Sports, and while he may not be facing off against the stiffest competition, he’s nonetheless managed to attract plenty of attention after his highlight reel went viral with the help of some hyperbolic posts on social media.

It is obviously laughable to suggest Rondo is a “top 5 NBA PG of all time,” and it’s equally absurd to assert he’s the “#1 ranked flag football QB in the country” when you consider there is no organization that keeps a running tally. With that said, USA Flag Football acknowledged his talents in a post where it encouraged him to participate in some games it sanctions.
At the risk of disrespecting the random people who signed up for an adult flag football league in Louisville and found themselves going up against a former NBA player, we probably shouldn’t judge Rondo’s talents based on his performance against a bunch of scrubs. With that said, it would be interesting to see how he fares against some higher-caliber players.
