‘There is now hope’: Keith Downie shares major double boost for two Newcastle United stars

Newcastle United lost all of Fabian Schar, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton to injury during Monday night’s dramatic defeat to Liverpool.

Liverpool beat Newcastle 3-2 at St James’ Park in a Premier League classic on Tyneside but the scoreline alone did not tell the whole story.

Indeed, Newcastle were down to the bare bones by the time Rio Ngumoha scored a late winner. Anthony Gordon had already been sent off before Eddie Howe lost three key players to injury.

Tonali injured his shoulder, Joelinton his groin and Schar took a knock to the head. As such, the Newcastle United manager does not have many options ahead of Saturday’s trip to Leeds.

Some positive news, however, has emerged in regard to Tonali and Joelinton.

Newcastle United get positive updates on Sandro Tonali and Joelinton

Newcastle’s midfield was their major strength last season, with Tonali and Joelinton forming a brilliant trio alongside Bruno Guimaraes.

With that in mind, the thought of missing two of their three star midfielders was a major worry.

Good news emerged on Wednesday, however.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie took to social media platform X to reveal that there is now hope neither Tonali nor Joelinton are set to miss a significant period of action.

Latest on Fabian Schar’s injury for Newcastle United

Schar confirmed he was feeling well after suffering a head injury against Liverpool.

However, such are the Premier League’s rules regarding concussions, the Swiss may not be allowed to feature against Leeds on Saturday.

Howe confirmed that Schar may have suffered a concussion against Liverpool, meaning he could need to take six days away from training before returning to action in order to recover.

That would mean he misses the Leeds game, though Howe does have options in central defence.

Malick Thiaw came on for his debut against the Reds, while Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman could also feasibly cover for Schar.
