Former NFL MVP signs multi-year deal with ESPN to appear on First Take

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton has agreed to a new multi-year contract with ESPN, the network announced on Wednesday. The move comes just in time for football season.

Newton signed with ESPN last October to appear on ESPN First Take.

However, he has now landed a new deal that comes with an expanded role on First Take, ESPN has announced.

“I am excited to be back with the First Take team and share my voice on all things sports," Cam Newton said in a statement. “This is an incredible opportunity for me to connect with fans and bring my passion and knowledge to a show I’ve always admired.”

Newton will return to the show this Thursday at Norfolk State University as a part of the First TakeHBCU tour.

He is joining a First Take show that includes sports personality Stephen A. Smith, host Molly Qerim and Sirius XM’s Chris “Mad Dog” Russo.

The return of Newton comes a month after ESPN announced that it was moving on from Shannon Sharpe after he settled a lawsuit accusing him of rape.

Sharpe denied the allegations and said that he was in a consensual sexual relationship with the woman. The lawsuit was dismissed on July 18 following a settlement, and ESPN cut ties with Sharpe shortly thereafter.

“Cam Newton is a unique talent who is authentically himself, and that’s a key ingredient for success on First Take," David Roberts of ESPN said. “Cam is also an ultimate team player. All of us at ESPN look forward to watching Cam create a strong connection with his teammates and our fans.”
