Alan Shearer has called on the uncertainty surrounding Liverpool-linked Alexander Isak to end this week. The transfer saga took an unexpected twist last week when the Newcastle United striker posted a statement on social media.
Isak was notably missing from Newcastle's Premier League opener against Aston Villa on Saturday. The ECHO's sister title ChronicleLive reports that the club are considering their next move.
The Sweden forward, valued at £150m, has recovered from the groin injury that sidelined him for the pre-season tour to the Far East. However, reports indicate he is eager for a move to Anfield before the summer transfer window shuts on September 1.
Legendary former Newcastle striker Shearer has pleaded for a resolution soon. “It has to be resolved," he told The Rest is Football podcast. "They can’t go through to next Monday again.
"They’ve got Leeds on Saturday. It’s just been going on and on. I know the chairman was in Newcastle last night so my guess would be that something has to be sorted in the next two or three days.
"It can’t drag on into the weekend again. One way or the other, it has to be resolved.”
He added: "Unfortunately, you have a three-year contract in this situation. That’s you or your agent's fault for signing such a long deal without any get-out clauses.
"I know football’s ruthless, I know how it works and I know when a club wants to get rid of you, as a player, they can. But that club is paying you for your services and you’ve got three years left.
"There’s a way of doing things. Look at how [Eberechi] Eze has conducted himself at Crystal Palace, totally different I know, look at [Marc] Guehi in a very difficult situation. He’s got one year left but Isak has three years left, of a six year deal that he or his agent signed so that’s where it’s very different."
Follow transfer deadline day live with the ECHO
Transfer deadline day is almost upon us and Liverpool still have business to do. It's already been a busy summer for the Premier League champions but they could still pull off a couple of blockbuster signings as the window comes to a close.
Alexander Isak's future remains unresolved, with the striker refusing to play or train for Newcastle United. Liverpool remain interested in a deal for the Swede.
Meanwhile, Marc Guehi has been a player of interest all summer and Liverpool could still launch a last-minute deal for the Crystal Palace defender.
