Keith Downie says Newcastle United are 'hopeful' as they await news on injury scans for Sandro…

· 27 August 2025, 17:00

It was a tough night for Newcastle United on Monday as they conceded a 100th-minute goal to undo all of their hard work coming back from 2-0 down against Liverpool.

Perhaps worse than that, though, was the fact that the Magpies lost three players to injury and one to suspension, meaning Eddie Howe is likely to have to make four changes to his lineup for the clash with Leeds United on Saturday evening.

Fabian Schar picked up a head injury, which saw Eddie Howe having to make a concussion substitution, handing Malick Thiaw his Newcastle debut. As a result, Newcastle must now follow concussion protocol, which means Schar will likely not be able to play on Saturday.

The injuries to Joelinton and Sandro Tonali looked a lot more serious, however, with Tonali not able to move his arm when he came off the field.

Newcastle feel Sandro Tonali and Joelinton's injuries aren't as bad as they looked

Keith Downie has provided an update on X this afternoon, suggesting that Newcastle are hopeful that neither injury is as bad as first feared.

Joelinton's wife, Thays Gondim, posted on Instagramyesterday that Joelinton's injury isn't as bad as it seemed and she expects him to be 100% after the international break.

However, there has been no official word on his or Sandro's injuries beyond what Keith Downie has said on social media.

🚨 Newcastle are hopeful Sandro Tonali & Joelinton’s respective injuries that saw them subbed against Liverpool aren’t as bad as first feared.

😩 Eddie Howe said post-match on Monday that neither player looked great.

🔜 Official confirmation following scans to come, but there is now hope neither player will be out for an extended period.

Newcastle could be back up to full strength for Wolves

It's obviously worth noting that even Downie's update should be taken with a pinch of salt, as it's just based on hearsay rather than any medical assessment.

The international break will come at a good time, allowing Joelinton and Tonali to rest up without any games.

Eddie Howe has the replacements to get Newcastle through the game on Saturday, and as long as there are no further casualties in that game, we could be back in a strong position for Wolverhampton Wanderers next month.
