What we know about the mass shooting at Annunciation Church

An active shooter has struck Annunciation Church on the south side of Minneapolis on Wednesday morning.

A law enforcement source told the Minnesota Star Tribune that two children were killed in the incident. The gunman is also dead, according to the source.

As of 9:30 a.m., the shooter had been “contained” and there is no active threat to the community, according to a city of Minneapolis alert.

A witness to the shooting, who did not want their name used, said students from the Annunciation Catholic School were seated in the church, located at 509 W. 54th St., for 8:15 a.m. Mass when a shooter opened fire from outside the building.

“He just pepper-sprayed through the stained-glass windows into the building, 50 to 100 shots,” he said.

Ashlee Sherrill, a spokesperson for the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, later called the incident an active shooter situation.

First responders said at least 20 people were injured in the incident, according to emergency dispatch audio.
