Leeds now frontrunners to sign 'phenomenal' £39m forward in deadline-busting deal - journalist

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke is waiting patiently to improve his creative ranks at Elland Road as the transfer deadline closes in, according to reports - and that could see the Whites look to force a deal through for Brighton youngster Facundo Buonanotte, with the newly-promoted outfit now 'leading the race' for his signature on loan.

The report by Argentine journalist, Cesar Luis Merlo, states that Leeds are leading the race to sign Buonanotte from Brighton in the final days of the transfer window - despite several clubs vying for his signature. There is other interest from the Premier League, namely West Ham United, though Leeds are the most determined to add him to their ranks ahead of the transfer window slamming shut on Monday evening.

GIVEMESPORT transfer correspondent Ben Jacobs then further stated on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday that the Whites are 'still alert' to Buonanotte, in case a loan deal for his services becomes possible in the final days of the transfer window.

He's not the Yorkshire outfit's only target, with Farke's side feeling throughout most of the summer that the 'phenomenal' Argentine would only like to move to a club that boasts European football for the upcoming season - with Bayer Leverkusen previously being linked for a fee of €45million (£39million).

As a result, there hasn't been a bid to Brighton yet, but Leeds are prepared to make their move if the opportunity presents itself to the 20-year-old, who joined Brighton just days after his 19th birthday at the start of January 2023.

The diminutive attacker began his career at hometown side Rosaria aged 10, working his way through their youth ranks before making his debut aged just 17, scoring four goals in 34 games in his only season for the club before moving to England.

Sporadic appearances over the following two years at the AMEX Stadium saw him become one of the most sought-after talents on the continent, featuring for the Seagulls in their Europa League run, before a loan move to Leicester City last season, scoring five goals in 31 games for the Foxes - though they were relegated in the process.

Leeds, meanwhile, will need attacking recruits if they are to stay up. Only beating Everton 1-0 on the opening weekend, their 5-0 loss to title-challenging Arsenal on Saturday evening brought them back down to earth, whilst a League Cup penalty shoot-out defeat to Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday evening saw huge room for improvement if they are to stay in the top-flight.
