Marquez Valdes-Scantling lands with Seahawks’ rival a day after release

Marquez Valdes-Scantling will play at Lumen Field to begin the 2025 regular season after all. Only, he’ll do so as a member of the opposing San Francisco 49ers and not the host Seahawks.

The 30-year-old Valdes-Scantling, cut by the Seahawks on Tuesday, has agreed to a deal with the San Francisco 49ers, according to multiple reports Wednesday morning. Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Valdes-Scantling, signed by the Seahawks in March to a one-year deal worth up to almost $4 million that included a $1.5 million signing bonus, had been reported to be considering the Steelers, the team the Seahawks play in Week 2.

Instead, he’ll head to the Bay Area and a 49ers team that has some issues with its receiver depth.

That depth got worse on Tuesday when it was announced that free agent signee receiver Demarcus Robinson had been suspended for the first three games of the 2025 season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Robinson played for the Rams last year and caught a winning TD pass in overtime at Lumen Field to beat the Seahawks.

Valdes-Scantling, who was eligible to sign with a team immediately since he was a vested veteran, will help fill that void for the 49ers while playing in what is a similar offense to the one he spent training camp practicing in with the Seahawks.

The release of Valdes-Scantling left Seattle with six receivers on its roster.

The Seahawks and other teams are already making other moves Wednesday morning as players become available via waivers and rosters are remaining fluid.
