The Miami Dolphins' disappointment of finishing with an 8-9 record and out of the playoffs led to fan frustration that, in at least one case, crossed into threatening territory for general manager Chris Grier.
On Wednesday, he explained to reporters how fans have interacted with him following the step back last season.
“When I’m out, people have been generally very positive to me, but I know there are guys ... I mean, I’ve gotten some colorful emails from a couple people, including hoping my kids die of cancer, which is a fun one,” Grier said. “I was like, there you go. That’s why I don’t take things very personally or seriously because other people have other issues in life.”
Grier added that most people hope he can turn the franchise around; it lost in the wild card round of the playoffs in 2022 and 2023. He also acknowledged that he receives pushback even when he feels positive about the team’s direction.
“If I’m out, people have always been respectful and nice, and they just say, ‘Hey, keep going, appreciate you,’” Grier said. “The guys, to my face, have been nice. I know there are people that are upset, but that’s with any job. If I was comfortable and saying I felt great about where things are, then I’m a (expletive) because I’m not being realistic about where we are as a team and where things are going. After last season, I’m frustrated like they are that we didn’t win enough games last year. I understand it.”
The Dolphins will open their season on the road against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 7.
