Liverpool agree deal for exit–Medical tests on Thursday or Friday

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf report a deal was agreed on Wednesday afternoon for James McConnell to leave Liverpool and move to Ajax for the season.

The transfer has been on the way to happening all week, with the Reds working to extend the 20-year-old’s contract so they could then agree a loan deal with the Eredivisie club.

McConnell moved to the Liverpool youth system in 2019 from Sunderland. He’s made his senior debut for Liverpool but there was little prospect of the youngster getting much game time under Arne Slot this season.

De Telegraaf report Ajax will be paying €1.5m as a loan fee, and there’s no purchase option in the deal given Liverpool clearly see a future for the player at Anfield.

Ajax have a fantastic reputation, built up over decades, for developing young players, and that’ll be why McConnell has jumped at the chance. Another attraction is Ajax manager John Heitinga, who was Slot’s assistant at Liverpool last season.
