Manchester United make Kobbie Mainoo decision as starting line up vs Grimsby confirmed

The Man Utd starting XI and confirmed team news as they face Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup second round.

Ruben Amorim's side are looking for their first competitive win of the new season as they face the League Two side in the Carabao Cup second round. Mainoo has not featured in either of the opening two Premier League matches of the campaign, which has led him to give fresh consideration to his future at the club.

The 20-year-old is open to leaving United before transfer deadline day after growing frustrated by his reduced role under head coach Amorim. Mainoo has featured regularly as a substitute this calendar year and also feels undervalued by his current contract, which was signed back in February 2023, just a month after he made his senior debut.

United sources insist they are not actively looking to sell Mainoo and still view him as a key part of the first-team squad, though the player will need to be convinced of his long-term role if he is to remain at Old Trafford and even consider signing a new and improved contract.

Mainoo will get the chance to do so tonight after he was one of eight changes to the starting line up from the weekend draw with Fulham. Andre Onana replaces Altay Bayindir in goal, while Tyler Fredricson and Ayden Heaven partner Harry Maguire in central defence.

Mainoo starts in midfield alongside Manuel Ugarte, with Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu in the wing-back roles. Amad and Matheus Cunha start in the attacking midfield roles with Benjamin Sesko handed his first start for the club. Fellow summer signing Diego Leon is on the bench in his first matchday squad role.

United XI vs Grimsby: Onana; Fredricson, Maguire, Heaven; Dalot, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dorgu; Amad, Cunha, Sesko. Subs: Bayindir, Heaton, De Ligt, Leon, Casemiro, Fernandes, Mount, Mbeumo, Zirkzee.
