Former Giants QB Finds New Opportunity with AFC Team

The New England Patriots are going to take a chance on the recently released New York Giants quarterback, Tommy DeVito.

According to reports, DeVito was claimed on waivers by the Patriots on Wednesday afternoon.

The 27-year-old New Jersey-born quarterback has spent most of his time in the NFL as a backup. During his college days, DeVito attended Syracuse before making a move to Illinois.

During his lone season at Illinois, DeVito played in 13 games. He threw for 2,650 yards while completing 70 percent of his passes. The young quarterback tossed for 15 touchdowns, while turning the ball over four times in the air. On the ground, DeVito scored six touchdowns during his final college effort.

Although DeVito was in the player pool for the 2023 NFL Draft, he went undrafted. Eventually, the Giants came calling and signed DeVito as an undrafted free agent. He started his career on the Giants' practice squad before getting the call-up after an injury occurred.

During his rookie season with the Giants, DeVito ended up appearing in nine games and serving as the starter for six matchups. The young quarterback completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions.

DeVito also rushed 36 times for 195 yards and one touchdown. As a starter with the Giants in 2023, DeVito finished the year with a 3-3 record.

Last season, DeVito got an opportunity to start in two games after the Giants decided to move on from Daniel Jones, who struggled. DeVito threw just 44 passes to total 257 yards. he didn't register any touchdowns in the air. The Giants went 0-2 with DeVito starting last season.

With DeVito getting waived by the Giants on Tuesday, the veteran quarterback left the organization with a 3-5 record. DeVito threw for 1,358 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions.

The Giants are heading into the 2025 NFL season carrying three quarterbacks. As expected, Russell Wilson will be the starter, which has been the case since he signed a one-year deal with the team back in the spring.

New York's front office also added Jameis Winston on a two-year deal. The veteran quarterback brings plenty of vocal leadership and experience to the table. Then, there's the rookie quarterback, Jaxson Dart. The 2025 first-round pick is expected to spend his first year in the NFL learning from the side.
