Promising Patriots wide receiver a surprise cut after roster deadline

Wide receiver Javon Baker only lasted one day on the New England Patriots’ 53-man roster.

As reported by MassLive’s Mark Daniels, the Patriots opted to cut the second-year wide receiver Wednesday, a bit of a surprise move roughly 24 hours after the trade deadline. ESPN’s Mike Reiss was the first to report the news.

Baker, a fourth-round pick in 2024, came in with high expectations as an athletic receiver. However, he failed to live up to the hype as a rookie.

Coming back in 2025, Baker was caught up in the shuffle of a packed receiver room in New England. However, the second-year UCF receiver added value by showing promise as a gunner on special teams.

If Baker clears waivers, it’s possible that he could remain in New England on the practice squad. However, it’s a roll of the dice. There’s a solid chance that another NFL team might want to get their hands on a Day 2 draft pick in just his second season.
