Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has again said how Kobbie Mainoo must fight to earn his place after being recalled to the starting line-up against Grimsby Town.

Amorim has made eight changes to his starting XI from Sunday's 1-1 draw against Fulham for tonight's second round clash at Blundell Park, with only Patrick Dorgu, Matheus Cunha and Amad retaining their places.

Mainoo, who is currently the subject of plenty of speculation ahead of the transfer window slamming shut next Monday evening, is poised to start in the centre of midfield alongside Manuel Ugarte. They are making their first starts of the season.

Following Sunday's draw at Craven Cottage, Amorim was quizzed about his decision to leave Mainoo on the bench for the second game running and he said the England international is competing with Bruno Fernandes for the same spot in his strongest starting XI.

Speaking ahead of tonight's tussle with Grimsby, Amorim, asked what he expects to see from Mainoo in the centre of midfield, told Sky Sports: "The same as any player in that position. I expect a lot from Kobbie Mainoo.

"Again, people think that sometimes you need to just give... I think it is important for Kobbie to fight for his place.

"I believe a lot in Kobbie; more than what everyone thinks. I believe a lot in Kobbie. I expect a lot from him. He is playing in one position and is fighting with Bruno. They can play together.

"We need to improve that position and you could see that against Fulham.

"I just expect the best from Kobbie in the same way as everybody."
