AS Roma have reportedly held positive talks to sign 19-year-old Chelsea sensation Tyrique George.
Chelsea youngster Tyrique George looks set to depart Stamford Bridge after fresh talks with AS Roma brought negotiations closer to completion. According to Fabrizio Romano via X, representatives from the Serie A side met the youngster’s camp in London on Monday, with discussions described as highly positive.
Chelsea insist on sell-on clause
While Chelsea appear ready to sanction Tyrique George’s departure, the Blues are determined to include a significant sell-on clause in the agreement. This ensures the club would benefit financially if the 19-year-old propect’s value skyrockets in future years, something many within Cobham believe is likely.
George is regarded as one of the most technically gifted attackers to come through Chelsea’s academy in recent seasons, and the club are reluctant to sever ties completely. Having joined the club in 2014, The Englishman has spent more than a decade in the youth ranks, becoming a familiar face to fans who closely follow the academy setup.
His potential has always been clear, with bursts of flair and composure in possession that made him stand out at youth level. However, breaking into Enzo Maresca’s senior squad has proven difficult in a summer where Chelsea have already invested heavily in attacking options. Several other clubs have also shown interest in him.
Some sections of the Chelsea support may view this transfer with disappointment. Tyrique George has impressed during his limited first-team outings, and many fans hoped to see him given more opportunities at Stamford Bridge. For a fanbase proud of the club’s conveyor belt of homegrown talent, watching one of their own leave before fulfilling his potential in blue is a tough pill to swallow.
At the same time, there is recognition that opportunities would be scarce this season. Chelsea’s squad is stacked with new arrivals, and for a 19-year-old trying to carve out consistent minutes, the timing may not be right. AS Roma, by contrast, can offer him a clearer pathway into regular football at senior level.
A fresh chapter in Rome for Tyrique George?
For George, a move to the Italian capital could be a career-defining decision. Roma are in the midst of restructuring their squad and see him as an exciting long-term project. Serie A has historically provided fertile ground for young talent to develop, and under the right conditions, George could thrive in Italy.
From Chelsea’s perspective, the deal represents smart business. The inclusion of a strong sell-on clause safeguards their future, and if the highly-rated attacker flourishes abroad, the club may one day reap the rewards.
While it is never easy to see a Cobham graduate move on, this deal might be best for all parties. George will finally gain the first-team minutes he craves, Roma acquire a highly promising winger, and Chelsea keep one eye on his future value.
