Luke Ayling and Tyler Roberts react to the latest news coming out of Leeds United

Sam Greenwood probably wins the award for the most-surprising transfer of the summer transfer window involving Leeds United, after the club confirmed his permanent exit on Wednesday evening.

Until tonight, Leeds had not sold a permanent player this summer. Rasmus Kristensen’s permanent move to German side Eintracht Frankfurt, which was confirmed in April, is on this year’s books for a £7.7m fee.

Diogo Monteiro has been sold to Portuguese side Arouca, though Monteiro is largely an U21 player and has not been involved with the first team or made his debut since he joined from Servette in 2023.

However, that has now all changed. Reports emerged on Tuesday night that Sam Greenwood would be leaving Leeds permanently after two loan spells with Middlesbrough and Preston, in the last two seasons.

Fabrizio Romano reported that Leeds would receive a £3.5m fee for the set-piece specialist. A good bit of business for Leeds, who only paid an initial £3m to land Greenwood from Arsenal way back in 2020.

Just 35 appearances and one goal later, and Greenwood has made the shock move to go to Poland and try something new. The versatile attacker has completed a move to Pogon, and will wear the no.90 shirt.

Following Leeds’ confirmation that Greenwood has left the club permanently, Greenwood took to social media to share his delight at leaving Leeds and joining Pogon, describing the club’s supporters as “loyal”.

Greenwood said on Instagram: “So happy to be at this brilliant club. Can’t wait to be playing at my new home in front of you loyal fans.”

Greenwood finally ends a difficult spell for him, after initially impressing at Preston before struggling in the second half of 24-25. Preston expert Olly Dawes detailed Greenwood’s drop off to LeedsUnited.News.

It was believed that Leeds wanted between £3m and £4m for Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt and Darko Gyabi and while Gelhardt has gone back on loan to Hull, Leeds have managed to rake in the fee for Greenwood.

Gelhardt was among those to react to his old Leeds pal moving to Poland, as did former Leeds teammate and Middlesbrough pal Luke Ayling. Tyler Roberts, who is at Shrewsbury Town, also commented.
