Grimsby Town knocked Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup at Blundell Park, winning on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time.
Manager Ruben Amorim made several changes to his XI that lost 1-0 to Fulham. Andre Onana, Kobbie Mainoo and Tyler Fredricson played for the first time this season.
The visitors suffered a horror start, with Grimsby scoring twice in the first 30 minutes.
Amorim cut a furious and helpless figure on the touchline as his players were completely outplayed by the League Two outfit.
The Portuguese coach made three changes to his side at the break with the hope of scripting a comeback.
Bryan Mbeumo offered United a lifeline in the 75th minute, finishing well to halve the deficit.
Then Harry Maguire rose highest to nod in from a corner, levelling the score and dragging the tie into a penalty shootout.
In a stunning twist, Mbeumo fluffed his spot-kick in sudden death, handing Grimsby a historic victory.
Player Ratings
Andre Onana – 0/10
In his first appearance of the season, he produced two horrific mistakes inside the opening half-hour.
By now, the whole world knows he can’t keep out routine shots, command his box during set-peices and will continue gifting goals. To top it off, one penalty save out of 12? His contract should be terminated.
Tyler Fredricson – 1/10
His 45-minute display clearly showed that he is not ready for senior football yet.
Harry Maguire – 5/10
Maguire seems to perform only when he is not wearing the captain’s armband.
He looked much more solid after the break and scored the equalising goal.
Ayden Heaven – 3/10
Came close to scoring but failed to guide his header on target.
Diogo Dalot – 1/10
He was caught napping for the opener and looked completely lost throughout the evening.
Amorim should explain why a defender who cannot defend is a part of the six-man leadership group.
Patrick Dorgu – 2/10
The left wing-back saw plenty of the ball but did little to trouble his opponents. Hauled off at half-time after a passive display.
Manuel Ugarte – 0/10
He was far too easily dispossessed for the opening goal and embarrassingly appealed for a foul instead of recovering.
If Amorim genuinely sees Ugarte as a superior midfielder to Mainoo, then the real problem lies with the manager.
Kobbie Mainoo – 4/10
Not a masterclass, but solid enough to prove he belongs in United’s midfield.
Capped his performance with the assist for Mbeumo’s goal.
Amad Diallo – 0/10
A night to forget for the Ivorian. He failed to beat his man, spent most of the game venting frustration at teammates and the referee, and drifted out of the contest.
He needs to focus on his own game rather than risk sliding into Garnacho-like habits.
Matheus Cunha – 1/10
With all the hype surrounding his arrival, he added little firepower to United’s toothless attack.
His penalty miss took the penalty shootout into the sudden death.
Benjamin Sesko – 2/10
The 22-year-old watched his new side crumble before his eyes for the first time.
He managed a couple of decent efforts, but his influence disappeared after the break.
Substitutions
Bruno Fernandes – 6/10
Brought much-needed calmness to the side and orchestrated play from the deep as a quarterback.
He slotted his penalty with perfection after the horror miss against Fulham.
Bryan Mbeumo – 6/10
The Cameroon international opened United’s account for the season, becoming their first scorer.
He timed his run well and finished smartly into the bottom-right corner.
Matthijs de Ligt – 5/10
The Dutch international played more as an attacker with United dominated the ball possession in the second half.
Mason Mount – 5/10
The England international claimed the assist for Maguire’s equaliser.
