Manchester United were shocked by Grimsby in a disastrous performance where a late comeback delayed the inevitable, losing 12-11 on penalties after drawing 2-2 in regular time.
Man Utd needed a fast start to calm the nerves, but they ended up ceding the advantage to Grimsby with a weak opening, leading to Grimsby taking a shock lead in the 22nd minute.
Andre was beaten on his near post for the first one, then found himself in no-man’s land for the second as United were shell-shocked with a 2-0 scoreline.
They got one back via Mbeumo’s first goal in the second half, while Grimsby had the ball in the net two more times, getting disallowed both times.
United’s resident saviour, Harry Maguire, ensured Amorim would live to fight on penalties with a header late on to level the game.
Onana saved one in the shootout, which was canceled out as Cunha missed United’s fifth, dragging the game to sudden death.
Mbeumo missed his penalty after one round was finished to send United home.

Man Utd player ratings vs Grimsby
Andre Onana – 2
Achieved the impossible by making Bayindir look like an upgrade. Culpable for both goals. Saved one penalty in the shootout out of 13.
More United News
Tyler Fredricson – 3
Rattled by the intensity of Grimsby and no senior player came to shield him.
Harry Maguire – 5
Expected better from him when the heads were falling. Scored late on to delay the inevitable.
Ayden Heaven – 4
Not helped by Onana’s passing, but his trademark composure on the ball went AWOL too.
Diogo Dalot – 2
Shouting and throwing arms around when calm heads are needed isn’t leadership. Can’t set the example with his own performances either.
Patrick Dorgu – 3
Overhit crosses, defensive lapses, and needless fouls completed the trinity of negatives. Off at half-time.
Kobbie Mainoo – 6
Best of a bad bunch as he tried to get the ball up the pitch. Added intensity off the ball. Amorim’s worries are plenty but Mainoo playing well reflects the worst on him.
Manuel Ugarte – 2
Ran around in midfield with zero structure and made unforced errors on the ball. Off at half-time.
Amad – 5
Like Dorgu, he was a willing runner who tried hard, but nothing was coming off for him either.
Matheus Cunha – 3
The worst of Cunha was on display here as he let frustration engulf him instead of trying to bring the team back into it. Missed the penalty that could have sealed it for United.
Benjamin Sesko – 5
Fed off scraps again but tried to make something out of nothing every time he was fed the ball.
Substitutes
Matthijs de Ligt – 4
Contributed to an absence of structure in defence after replacing Fredricson at half-time.
Bruno Fernandes – 6
Tested the goalkeeper with a sighter and proved critical to the comeback.
Bryan Mbeumo – 4
Found himself in threatening positions and scored his first goal via a deflection. Missed the decisive penalty.
Mason Mount – 4
Came on to play as the wing-back. No heroics.
Joshua Zirkzee – 5
Came on late as Amorim threw the kitchen sink at Grimsby.
